Aerial of the Day #170 - 13 Aug 2002
« on: August 13, 2002, 06:19:41 AM »
Perserverance pays off sometimes.  This is the aerial that I
was going to use last Tuesday until the stork came and
interrupted my plans.  I say perserverance because this
aerial wasn't even available a week before last week, and I
keep checking every now and then on the ones that aren't
available to see if they've been added.

FYI, courses still unavailable at all include Sand Hills,
Whistling Straits, Bandon/Pacific Dunes, Beechtree/Bulle
Rock, Twisted Dune/Hidden Creek, Easthampton, Warren
Course, Kingsley Club/Arcadia Bluffs, Rustic Canyon,
Chechessee Creek/Cherokee Plantation, Wolf Creek (NV).

Back to today's, that's a very interesting two holes in the
upper left corner.  I've heard of two fairways for one hole,
but one fairway for two holes?  What is this, TOC?  Must keep
you alert at all times for incoming balls from the other hole.

Also, I left in a little more extra room at the bottom of the
aerial for some other reason to be revealed later.

I also thought that more holes on this course might be east-
west to face the teeth of the wind directly/be downwind directly.

Enjoy:

Oh yes, I know this one.  Oh yes, I do.  Trying to think
of something that won't give it away...
Let's just say firm and fast exists quite well here.
Quite well indeed.

A certain regular here would love for you to
leave in a bit more on the top left....

Its a poster child for affordable golf.

Huck,

Is that where it is?  Shoot, I was thinking it was going to be
at the bottom.  Maybe I'll provide a link to it to see that spot
later today.

Scott - I believe we're thinking of the same thing...
a certain "property", correct?  The revered regular
explained it to me as such being behind #2 green and #3
tee (which are the two holes using one fairway).
That's top left.  To be more exact, I believe said
property would be due left of the top left corner
of this picture... in the bigger aerial does it show a maintenance barn?
That's what his property attaches to.

Of course, I could be completely
full of sh*t re this and my memory has certainly failed
before...

Scott:

Can't see the aerial on my screen but the clues make it sound like ND doesn't mean Notre Dame.  Am I on track?

It's not ND... the only way it's close to that
is in the two-letter abbreviation of the state
in which this course lies.

By the way, the two holes sharing one fairway
are eminently safe... look at the angles from the
respective tees... the area is massive and play
does not intersect unless you hit hooks of
Baker-Finch at St. Andrews proportions.

Huck,

Yes, that "property".  I checked and I see the maintenance
barn now.  "Barn" is certainly the right word, considering
where this course is located and what surrounds it.

And I can hook' em big with the best of them.  So, fore!  My
home course has quite a few parallel holes, which keeps my
handicap artificially low for when other courses ain't so
parallel or are not forgiving off the fairway.

Chip,

ND as in North Dakota?  Links of ND at Red Mike was already
done as an AOTD (#81), if that's what you're thinking.  And
it isn't Engh's Hawktree, either.

Scott:  it takes a BIG hook to bring
the other fairway in play. These two holes are
actually very cool... first one is typically
downwind, second into... that one bunker
in the middle dominates proceedings on
both.  Very cool indeed.

Was my placement of the barn correct?

BTW, I have been completely remiss... CONGRATS
on the new arrival!  Getting any sleep?

TH,

Yes, the barn(s) are there.

Sleep is O.K.  Finding time to work on aerials is getting scarce.

It figures, Mr. Property in Today's Aerial hasn't seemed to be
in today.  I always seem to know when they're not around...

As far as another clue, I bet when the wind kicks up (which
is most of the time, I assume), this course can hurt you like
a bucking bronco.

Isn't this the second AOTD that
the certain "regular" knows very
well?  Wasn't a Langford / Moreau
course up north also featured?

How much do we love this place!!

If it was only a little less remote. But then again if it wasn't it might not have the allure it does have.

Every time I hear of the architects, I expect them to be a C&W band!

back from a meeting....

last clue:

Ron Whitten and Johnny Carson hail from this state.

3 other courses unavailable for aerials are the Rees trio of
Nantucket, Olde Kinderhook, and The Bridge.

This is GCA darling Wild Horse, in Gothenburg, Nebraska, by
C&C "boys" Dave Axland and Dan Proctor.  So much has been
said about Wild Horse here that not much else needs to be
said.  A poster child for fun & affordable public golf that has
the windy, linksy feel to it, with the appropriate fast & firm
conditions necessary.

GCAer Dick Daley is the Wild Horse resident spokesperson,
who bought a lot near the 2nd & 3rd holes in the upper left
corner.  Though he lives in Green Bay, his heart lies here.

Dick's property abuts the maintenance barns shown in this shot:

http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=10&T=1&X=1995&Y=22674&Z=14&W=2

Axland & Proctor were intimately involved with Sand Hills, a
few hours to the NW.

clues include:

"wild horses" "couldn't drag me away"  (took me little bit to
get that one)

mention of Dick's property

maintenance "barn" is appropriate, because farmland
surrounds WH.  A "crop circle" is literaly across the street in
the top part of the aerial.

"bucking bronco" = "wild horse"

"soap" maker = "Proctor" & Gamble

Johnny Carson and GD's Whitten hail from Nebraska.

Here's Whitten's pic and piece on WH:

and Dick Daley's My Home Course feature, with plenty of pics:

aw, heck, here's the pics:

Scott, with your perfect timing to do my favorite course in the whole world as AOTD when I'm not around;  you might as well be my stock market advisor too!!! ::)
