Eduard Imhof - Cartographic Relief Presentation

Flannery O'Connor - The Complete Stories

Michael,

I've always felt that O'Connor's Everything That Rises Must Converge is one of the very greatest short stories in the language.

Of course, one might say that about any number of her works.

Bob - I have read that Peter Godwin book. I thought it was a very good evocation of a society in decline, done with a light touch.

Sean - sounds like you are preparing to wield power! Where will it end?!

Current/recent books include:

What I didn't know by Robert Hughes

Midnight in Sicily by Peter Robb

To the Castle and Back - Vaclav Havel

Napoleon by Paul Johnson.

Alastair Campbell's diaries

And countless bought and unread others!

As someone who enjoys short stories thanks for the tip on Flannery O'Connor. I took a moment and looked her up in Wiki and found her life to be quite interesting as well.

I look forward to reading this Southern Gothic writer

As noted in my earlier post David Foster Wallace short stories are quite good.

I enjoy this OT when it comes up a it gives me a good list of rather eclectic reading material.

"Tommy" by Richard Holmes.
It's about the British soldier in World War One.

"The World Crisis 1911-1918" by Winston Churchill.

At various stages of completion either on my desk at home, my desk at work, in my car or on my nightstand:

In the Wake of the Plague by Norman Cantor:  explores the possibility/likelihood that not all the deaths were due to bubonic plague but may have been a mutated anthrax that affected people.

WodehouseItalic by Robert McCrum:  a very detailed biography of the great humorist who wrote the finest short stories about golf we have or are ever likely to have.

Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin: revealing Lincoln as the master politician who kept his friends close and his enemies even closer.

The Code of the Woosters by P. G. Wodehouse:  Not one of the golf stories, but considered a prime example of the Jeeves-Wooster saga.

Albion’s Seed by David Hackett Fischer:   the subtitle is most descriptive Four British Folkways in America.  A massive book crammed with detail.  A slow but worthwhile read.
Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

I'm not really registered, but I couldn't find a symbol for certifiable.

What is the last book you gave away and why?  What do you do with a book you have read?

I bought ten extra copies of Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry, The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold and Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt and gave them to friends and family.

I keep a lot of books but I also give a lot away.

Mr. Huntley, I never finished Hitchins God in not Great, and I'm a big fan of Hitchens. Did you ever read his Why Orwell Matters.

Cheers,

Dan,

Like you I did not finish 'God is not Great' I think he made the  point, to his satisfaction within the first ten pages.

I have indeed read just about everything there is of Orwell. One small essay on making a cup of tea is a jewel.

As long as we're on Steinbeck, let me recommend "The Grapes of Wrath." It may seem an obvious choice, but I hadn't read it until I was well into adulthood, and approached it like an unfamiliar vegetable -- everybody said it was good for you, but I didn't know anyone who'd actually consumed it.

It's a fantastic read, in my estimation one of the ten best American Novels, and not just because it's good for you. Steinbeck is eminently readable; most here would also really enjoy "Cannery Row" and "Tortilla Flat."

I'm in a writing rather than reading mode at the moment, but this summer I read "Falling Man," by Don DeLillo.  It is one of the very few (maybe 5) books I have read that I plan to read again, both soon and over the rest of my life.

I also just finished Game of Shadows. If this book is a lie then Barroid Bonds would have sued those guys for every nickel they are worth. If his HR record doesn't deserve an *, then I don't know what does. For Roger Maris to have an * and not that cheating prick is a crime.

Recently read Shibumi by Trevanian. Have been reading the golf short stories of P G Wodehouse [silly fun, that]. Finished the entire Harry Potter series, Rowling is a great story teller.

I think I have read every day since I was four.

Don DeLillo utterly blows me away.....

I've recently finished the 7th Harry Potter. Wanna know how it ends?

On 'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell currently, which is either a right load of twaddle or quite possibly the best book I've ever read.

Next up is 'Before Scotland' by Alistair Moffat. A pre-history of my homeland, supposed to very interesting with some new thinking. We'll see...

Recently finished:

"In Our Time: by Hemingway, a compilation of short stories and outtakes from several novels. Included is "Big Two Hearted River" and other Nick Adams stories, which are introspective. "Big Two Hearted River" is just exceptional.

"The Dream Manager" by Matthew Kelly. Kelly has written several terrific books about relationships and self improvement. This is his first foray into management.

"Baseline Selling" by David Kurlin. A must for any sales person who wants to grow his capabilities.

"Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Examines A. Lincoln's cabinet. Starts out slow with lots of biographical background on the characters but is the best I've read on the subject.

Currently reading "Hamlet." Haven't read it in a while and my daughter is reading for school.

Jim, this past summer I read a collection of Hemingway's short stories and I agree, they are simply brilliant.

Right now, I am working through the "Rebus" series of mysteries by the Scottish writer, Ian Rankin.  I have never been much of a fan of murder mystery fiction, but my wife encouraged me to try them and I am hooked.  He depicts the seedy underside of Edinburgh the tourist never sees, and Rebus is a compelling, dark, and conflicted main character.

You guys are making me feel guilty.

Currently, I am reading: "What to Expect in the First Year," sequel to "What to expect when you are expecting" (I didn't read that).  Evidently my wife and I forgotten how to care for an infant in the last 4 years.

Also, I am reading some books on Commercial Lending, that's what I do.

I gotta get to Barnes and Noble, it sounds like there is some good stuff there.
