Glad to hear I'm  gaining points on the "Doak" scale.

The 18th at DuPont is much improved in my opinion and the club, which is what counts to me.

The greens (again, in my opinion) are a huge inprovement when you consider what DuPont engineers did to them in the sixties (bulldozed them flat).

I'm really proud of that renovation because it never started out to be that large a scope but through reasonable negotiation and the help of a great golf course superintendant (John Gosselin) it got to be what it should have been.

As a sidebar, the intent was to have the course ready in 1 year so the LPGA would not be interrupted.  We busted butt with Landscapes Unlimited and the DuPont Staff and got it done.  Unfortunately, the politics did not work out and the LPGA moved.  Watch your radar, that may open the course up for another event of equal or greater magnitude.

Now ,Lester move on to the Nemours course. Getting rid of the present #1 and # 2 is a great start. My dad was a member for 40 years and loved to call Nemours "sporty". Please keep that concept in mind.

One other thing about Dupont.  The greens were spectacular, both in condition and speed, and design as well.  Probably my favorite part about the course.

Longbow Golf Club in Mesa AZ has an interesting story.  A Ken Kavanaugh design that was built by McDonnell Douglas in 1997, it was sold in 2002 to a development company who was able to provide some additional acreage. They had Kavanaugh come back to rip up totally redo the course.  A more complete story here:

Having played the original version only once (in a corporate outing - so I don't remember too much... :P ),  I can't really say whether the new layout is better, but it is certainly a challenging and enjoyable course that is reasonably priced and only 9 miles from my home so I've been playing there a lot.

Gentlemen,

Appreciate the comments about DuPont.  I disagree that the 18th isn't better, I think it is and so does my client, which is what counts.  The old hole was marginal, and any hole that offers an option is generally better.

Glad to hear I might be climbing on the "Doak" scale (whew!)

Lester,

I'm an army of one with minor complaints about the 18th...plus, I love to quibble with my buddy Malone.   ;)

As I mentioned in earlier posts, the course is much, much improved and the back nine is terrific.

 Mike,

It is good for the soul to just admit you are wrong.

The size of the circular area available on #18 is large enough to entice you to try to go over the creek even though you  have a tree to contend with on the right, some nasty rough left and a bunker long.

The ideal spot is not the center or right side of the fairway over the creek, it is that circle of opportunity.

I admire your photographic memory ; I find it scary sometimes . But it doesn't work all the time.

I would say The Retreat Course at Sea Island was a very successful re-do.  Everything was changed except the original golf corridors, and even they were modified through the clearing of approximately 40 acres.  Formerly known as the St. Simons Island Club, this course went from being considered the step child of the three Sea Island courses to one of the members favorites.  18 very good green complexes.
