Best Course along I-40?
« on: October 03, 2007, 03:55:34 PM »
Moving to North Carolina at the end of this month and I'm wondering what the best course along I-40 is.  Literally, the mapquest directions call for me to get on I-40 in Barstow, CA and stay on it all 2400 miles to Durham, NC.

I'm thinking Paa-Ko Ridge might be the best...but is there anything else along the way (when I say along the way, I mean no more than 10-15 minutes off the interstate).

Don't remember my map routes perfectly, but I am wondering if Forest Highlands (in Doak's 31 flavors) is nearby in Flagstaff?

I-40 goes right through Flagstaff, but isn't F.H. private?

Pretty much stuck with public options, as nice as FH looks.

I made the same drive in moving to and from Durham, NC/Livermore, CA. The only place I stopped to play golf was  Black Mesa (because of the profile on this site) in La Mesilla, NM. It's about 30 minutes out of the way, but well worth it.

...if you can get access, of course.

Get as much speed as you can and drive straight through to Asheville. Spend a week there. On to Durham, then down 1.5 hours to Pinehurst.

I've been fortunate enough to have spent 3 weeks in Pinehurst thanks to the Middlebury College golf team...that's not to say I won't be spending my fair share of time down there once I live an hour away :)

C'mon, no Doak 9s in Amarillo, TX???  ;D

Lubbock.

What you ought to do is swing down to El Dorado and tarry at Jack Stephens' doorstep.  I'm sure he'll have ya. Maybe a "death letter" would do the trick...

This of course assumes you borrow Tiger's Gulfstream to get from ABQ to La Mesella.

This is not the best but the Alocian Club in Little Rock is along that highway. The Snuffy Club aka Golf Club of Tennessee with historic bordello and moonshine facilities on the property is located right outside of Nashville.

I would think about trying to play a Perry Maxwell course in Oklahoma.

Golf Online lists the following among the "best" of Maxwell:

Dornick Hills, Ardmore, OK (1913-23)
Muskogee CC, Muskogee, OK (1924)
Oklahoma City G&CC, Oklahoma City, OK (1930)
University of Oklahoma GC, Norman, OK (1950) - with Press Maxwell

I'm not sure how far these are away from I-40 but it might be worth making a phone call tro try and get on even if they are private.

Dear Ryan:

I am sure happy you are moving out here!! We will have to get together to play Tobacco Road.

I just completed the drive from Ventura, CA to Virginia Beach, VA. I did not get to play any golf along the way because we had a lot of miles to cover. I looked into courses along I-40 and found very few. There are some good courses at the casino outside of Albuquerque, http://www.paakoridge.com/livecam/index.asp

Also there are few in Oklahoma and Tennessee. The best thing to do is check the Golf Digest course finder.

Ryan,
Trust your original instinct and play Paa-Ko Ridge, which might be a bit cold by the end of the month but would still be open (its at 6,500 feet). It fits your close to the interstate criteria and is very good. Black Mesa is a great course, but I'd be impressed if you could get to it from I-40 in under an hour.

If just ranking courses along I-40 though I would give the nod to Forest Highlands Canyon. The difference isn't that great though because Paa-Ko holds its own.

Or if you can't get onto Holston Hills, and just want a quick round at a public, you might try Greystone, in Dickson TN. Very very layout for under $35.

There is a quirky muni in Holbrook, Arizona called Hidden Cove. An odd layout, but with a few holes at the base of an amazing rock cliff. When I played there many years ago (on Thanksgiving) there was a sign that read, "Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy your round." No one was there.

I won't make it out to be a great course but 2 fun courses in central Oklahoma (less than an hour west of OKC) are Sugar Creek Canyons in Hinton (8-10 miles south of 40) and Crimson Creek in El Reno, it's only a mile or so off of 40.
