What do you think of this par 3??
« on: October 04, 2007, 03:05:18 PM »
Found this picture on the net today when looking for something. It is a visually stunning hole, or at least a good picture. It's from a well known architect

It's on the short side. 163, 144 & 126 yards from the black, blue & white tees.

I have not played it. Has anyone seen it or played it?

I don't know how you could recover if you miss the green.

Thoughts??

Any guess on course & architect?

If you like the 17th at TPC Sawgrass you'll probably like this hole as well.  Looks like an island green with no water.

Dave - No it's not Jim Engh, but based upon the location you could assume that.

Can you play your ball if you miss the green?  e.g. what happens if you miss short left, and end up in that sea of rocks?

My guess would be Jack Nicklaus, and the hole from the regular tees is 205 yards . . . .  ;D

I dig it.

Wonder if the green is too small to handle 200 yd shots, though.

Surely my 200 yarders don't come in high and soft!

Looks to me like the kind of setting Fazio likes to create.

John,

I'm betting Hurdzan/Fry.

Isn't this their Bully Pulpit course?

I like it.

If you were walking the property with a club and ball, before the course was built, you might try that shot just for fun.

Seems like a good place to build a hole then.

It is not Bully Pulpit, and Hurdzan did Bully Pulpit by himself.

I like it too. Since 165 is a smooth sand wedge for me, a big number would be justified if I couldn't hit that green. ;D

I see you have one of the latest sets of irons where you have been guaranteed to hit the sand wedge farther than you used to hit it in your old set. I.e., the loft is 38 degrees. Don't know how you are going to get out of deep bunkers though. That must now be a job for the lob wedge.

It is a nice photo but I don't think I like it as a golf hole.

A lot would depend on how big a target the green is.  A 10,000 square foot green--OK.  It does look like a large target and you could roll off the sides and be playable.  Also Im not sure what trouble is long although I assume it looks the same as the trouble in front.  At 6,000 and then I'm voting "No". :)

And yes, I dislike the 17th at TPC as well.

Excellent eye candy but not a good hole in my opinion. Too penal for missing the green. I don't like the 17 at TPC or the 11th at the Ritz in Jupiter, too many big numbers for slight misses.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

John,

I forget the name of the course but it is in Colorado, southwestern if memory serves me right.  It is indeed a Nicklaus course.

I received a brochure in the mail the other day about investment opportunities...

What else would you do with a green sized plateau?

I think there is a difference between a "natural" plateau and an excavated lake.

I believe the course is called Cougar Canyon.

I'm not a huge fan of these "island" greens.  If you get a big wind and firm conditions they can become almost unplayable.

That makes it even more interesting...
I wonder who routed this course?

I played Eagle Eye at Bath, MI. It's 17th is supposed to be a nearly exact replica of TPC Sawgrass #17. I hit one 9-iron into the water before staying on, but my 1st shot was really poor, and the second was certainly indifferent, but held.

This green looks larger. I think it should be able to hold most 'indifferent' shots. I like the look of the hole. I suspect a shot onto the rocks sends you to a drop area where a pitch from 50yd or some such is expected.

Looks fun to me.

I think Jack's overdoing it.  Whatever he learned from Doak, it sure wasn't minimalism.

Is this a case of "the landform was there, we need to do something with it?"

I'd like it more if the recovery options were club-friendly.
