How much do maintenance...
« on: October 11, 2007, 03:00:05 PM »
issues affect the design of bunkers?  This past year there was a major reconfigurance of a greenside bunker on #6 at The Virginian (Tom Fazio design) which greatly affected the way the hole plays.  It is a shortish par 5 that can be reached in two if you can drive the ball to the left half of the fairway; however, you risked hitting into a gaping, deep bunker guarding the green short.  This bunker was apparently very difficult to maintain (according to the course pro and super) and so it was shallowed and made smaller.  This changed the nature of the hole dramatically...nearly eliminating the risk of going for the green in two (as long as you are properly positioned off the tee).  Somewhat disappointing, to say the least.  Hence the question:  What can you tell me about your bunker designs that allow for both challenge and proper maintenance?  Is there a maximum angle of slope that allows for decent maintenance..etc?  Thanks for teaching me.

Let the architects answer this one. It should be a significant factor in bunker design if the design team notes the budget, type of course and market.
