Par 69 on the Tour
« on: September 26, 2007, 05:16:24 PM »
I know this is a bit dated but the 16th hole at East Lake was played as a 495-yard par 5.  I wonder if this is the only sub-500 yard par 5 on the tour schedule.  I presume there is no room to lengthen this hole and they retained the illusion that it is a par 5 for the Tour because otherwise the course par would have been 69, which wouldn't do.

Isn't #13 at Augusta still played at less than 500 yards? It may have been lengthened in the past 3-5 years, but I know it used to be less than 500 yards.

I think it became over 500 yds when the expanded into Augusta CC a few years back.

EL should have been a par 69....but they are still pussies about the par 70 barrier.

Someday they will see the light.

13th at Augusta is now 510 yards long.

How does 16th at East Lake play?  Long for its distance?  Short?  Are there hazards, that give it good risk/reward options?

Also, I wonder what the average score there was, and how hard it ranked against par, compared to the rest of the course.

Philadelphia Country Club was converted to a par 69 for the 1939 US Open (from 70).  Hey, if they can do it for an Open, East Lake can do it for a mere Tour Championship.  Paul, tell those Atlanta wimps that it has been done and should be done.  Tom Paul is going to print up some cards with par 69 and substitute them while burning the current ones.  That old Marine will sneak in and out without being seen, swallowing the filters of his Marlboros to leave no trace.
