NORCAL OUTING FOR NOV. 17th SCHEDULED--MORGAN CREEK GOLF CLUB
« on: September 24, 2007, 07:57:12 PM »
Okay, I just got off the phone with Mark Thawley from the Kyle Phillips design group and we set a date.

On November 17th, we'll be playing the private Morgan Creek Golf and Country Club in Roseville (just outside Sacramento). After, we'll do a question and answer with Mike, possibly Kyle (Mark is checking his schedule), and Stephen McVey, the club's superintendent.

After the Q&A, Mark and/or Kyle will also be doing a slide show on the restoration/renovations of the California Golf Club and Sacramento's Del Paso Country club. (There may be an opportunity to ride some holes at Del Paso in the morning before the Morgan Creek round with Mark and/or Kyle, we're working on this.)

Morgan Creek's website is here:

http://morgancreekclub.com/

Golfweek recently ranked Morgan Creek as the 17th best new course in the country. As a member and architecture buff, I'm curious to see what some other folks think of the course as well.

The course is VERY walkable (it was designed as such) and very playable in wet conditions.

Tee times will be between 11 and 11:30, and price is yet to be determined (I'm speaking with the General Manager to work out pricing right now), but it shouldn't be much more than $50 a person to walk.

I can get as many times as needed/wanted. We'll likely set up the times based on player's abilities, and I'll try to have at least one member of golf course or architecture staff in each foursome.

Here's who's in so far:

1. Jed Peters
2. Matt Cohn
3. Chanon Motheral (+ handicap/member from Morgan Creek)
4. Brad Cady (Head Golf Professional)
5. Mark Thawley (Kyle Phillips Design)
6. Kevin Reilly
7. Kyle Henderson's dad
8. John Vander Borght
9. Tim Leahy
10. Mike Bentham
11, Kyle Henderson
12. Ed Getka
13. Stan Dodd
14. Joel Stewart
15. Ron Muszalski
16. Steve Pieracci
17. Scott Henderson
18. Pete Galea
19. Conner Galea

Cal's playing away that day, so no excuses!

Price is $50 per person including food, $65 to ride if you choose to take a cart. There are free pull carts available for use.

There is a full range and practice facility free included in your greens fee.

Please note the morgan creek dress code.

Tentative yes...unless they have playoffs for 4th grade soccer (season slated to end the previous Sat.).

Bears are in Seattle that day.  :)

Oh boy, my first NorCal outing.

Put me down as a tentative yes.  At this point my life schedule is too much up in the for a definite yes, but I'm probably 90% sure I can make it.

Don't fall for that reply, it probably is golf related ...

And I will be a tentative yes, the SCU Broncos are also out of town that fall college football weekend ;)

I live in Sacto and would like to join the outing if you have the space. I am a 14 hdcp. I played Morgan when it opened and would be interested in seeing how it has grown in.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Count me in! I don't keep a handicap these days... It's probably ~10. Can't wait!

Jed,
I have confirmed I have the day off from work, so count me in. Looking forward to meeting some new faces. Thanks again for setting this up.

Good point Bill. Now we'll just have to track down the trophy that Mr Fortson has in his possession. :)

Bite your tongues, both of you.  That event does NOT occur without me battling for the return of said trophy, and I absolutely cannot play golf on 11/17.  So call this something else... in fact that's a hell of an idea... this can be the FIRST edition of a new competition, one that can have act II in 2008... hmmmm... we might have just stumbled upon the answer to "the TKP problem."

Jed,
Add one more, Ron Muszalski would like to join us.

Tom,
Okay okay, we won't call it Kings Putter as you are certainly one of the stalwart supporters of the competition. :)

The weatherman don't know.

Could be 85, could be 65.

Could rain, could be sunny.

Odds are in our favor, however.

Okay, all.

I am speaking with our GM and he's wondering if there are any panelists/authors/industry folk coming (apart from the folks from Kyle Phillip's design group, and our courses' staff).

I'm trying to avoid any potential issues regarding favoritism/conflicts of interest or the like, but want some justification regarding getting a better guest fee or integrating a buffet snack lunch in after golf to the equation for a set fee. We'll be able to eat after golf while the folks from Kyle's group do a Q&A on the course and a slide show on the renovation/restorations of Del Paso and Cal Club.

So, send me a quick note if you're "anybody". NOTE: I have spoken to the GM and told him FIRMLY that any sort of comp/greens fee rate will NOT affect the review/rating of the course.

Best,

Jed

Jed,
I am a nobody for the purposes of your last post. :)

I see no reason to have any bargain basement guest fee for us, and I would be very happy to have some food after the golf included. The golf and talk are reason enough to come.

I am also interested in seeing what is going on over at Del Paso if that will be possible.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Classic, Matt. Was that borrowed from Will Ferrell, perhaps? I can't quite place it. You also might try, "I drive a Dodge Stratus!"

Jed,

Okay, I told the GM he'd have no luck getting a list of who's who and what's what.

I'm working out a deal now wherein we do golf, then a lunch deal.
