On the bright side, at least we're not playing on the Continent.  Pretty soon I'll have to substitute my Sterling mental conversion algorithm for my Euro mental conversion algorithm. Or just stay home and count my Cruzeiro-like dollars.

Also, this place Akbar's.  It offers up the enthusiastic slogan, "Probabaly the best Indian restaurant in the North of England."

Then the menu mentions its cuisine as indigenous to "North of Pakistan."  Is this some expression of lingering resentment toward the Raj or a "curry play" for takeover / reunion? (When I did consulting for one of the multilateral financial institutions we developed a parametric risk model. This model included a factor for an Indo-Pakistan border war once every 46 years. So far so good!)

Lastly, we must all take special care Wednesday the 19th for this is the anniversary of the Beeb's first broadcast of "Fawlty Towers."

Here's hoping Akbars makes a good Waldorf Salad.

Congrats to Mark P!

Mark

To me this is a ringing endorsement.  A few years ago, our local "Indian" was called Khan's, which advertised itself as "Possibly the best Indian Restaurant in West Fife."  It was pretty damn good, and probably would have made you a Waldorf salad, even though it was not on the menu.

They must all use the same advertising agency......

Whilst deeply honoured to lead the civilised world against the rest I am, of course, concentrating on the immediate challenge.  I'll not rise to the bait laid down by my opposite number but will wait patiently for Wednesday afternoon to unleash my finely tuned team of athletes.  Let battle begin!
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Due to some recent and unpredicatable CLAW (tm) malfunctions, I've been Deigeling recently, and will hold a clinic on such for Team USA at 6:30 on the practice putting green Wednesday AM, just after our 4-mile run to scout out the daily pin positions.  Attendance is not mandatory, but will be looked on favorably when deciding on the seating chart for the evening meal.

Mark P.

Please do bring on your athletes.  One can only hope that they display the same skill and fighting spirit as the members of the English rugby team.

Two more pictures. The first taken at the GCA Hickory morning has Mark standing next to another member of his team Andrew Mitchell (any relation to the Walford branch of the family? Could be useful if the match is close.)

Don't the England team look very smart in their uniform.

I played hockey in my twenties with David Gower's doppleganger.  The similarity was so close that he was frequently mistaken for the then still playing genius.  Very successful with the ladies was Alastair Tapp.

I realise most if not all of the ROW team will be en route but I'd like to add some infomation on our new guests for us to welcome them.

John Kinnear & Tom Thomas who are known to Bill McBride will join us  on Wed morning at breakfast at Alwoodley.   They will also like to dine with us on Thursday night.

Thursday at Dinner Nick Leefe will talk a little about MacKenzie at Alwoodley (& Harry Colt & Herbert Fowler !!!)

Also joining us for dinner will be David Richardson (Centenary Captain) & immediate Past Chairman + Ken Rigby (Vice Captain) & Ken will also join us for golf on the Thursday.

All that and a mystery GCA guest too ;)  See you there.

Let's make GCA grate again!

I was away all last week with no computer access. I see I missed quite a lot!

Lloyd - sorry to hear that you will not be fit to lead All England into battle.  Hopefully I will see you at Moortown on Friday and in concert on Saturday.

Mark - delighted that you have stepped forward into the breech and to lead us to victory.  I look forward with eager anticipation to your inspirational speech next Wednesday.  You will no doubt be pleased to learn that I spent last week in Majorca playing golf badly and drinking copious amounts of alcohol.  Perfect preparation for this week.

Tony - intrigued by your reference to a mystery guest. Presumably well known?  I didn't know that this recent arrival in Leeds was a golfer!

2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Tied at 8 1/2 each after 4 rounds.  Tomorrows singles will decide the BUDA Cup.  A weather forecast of localised flooding surely suits the home side.

What happened!

Rich "Sheepishly Dry and in Fife on Friday" Goodale

A dozen brave and hearty soles wandered out into the bleak, wet wasteland and returned with a score in favour of her Majesty's truest subjects of 4 1/2 v 1 1/2.  The BUDA Cuo resides proudly on the Pearcefamily fireplace, where it may stay until next year.

Moortown was, as you saw, wet.  The rain finally stopped at 3pm.  None of the morning groups played the full 18 holes but Mark Bourgeois, Craig Disher and Jim Goby put the rest to shame by going out again in the afternoon.

Until next year.......

Gentlemen
Well played!
I arrived in Manchester in plenty of time to attend, but bad traffic prevented my arrival in Leeds until lunch time. I'm afraid that by then my weakened system needed sustinance and rest. The Leeds show was attended by a few Buda participants who relayed the result. Thanks. I am still not well, worse today, and it's a good thing I didn't attened.

I want to offer great thanks to everyone (present or absent) who had a hand in organizing this year's Buda Cup. It was an outstanding event that was well thought out from start to finish. From accommodations, to courses, to meals... everything ran like clockwork, which made the outing a tremendously pleasant experience for everyone.

Kudos to Tony who shouldered the burden of keeping us all together and moving forward each day. Tony took on the financial responsibility of the group (which is not an easy task), allowing the rest of us to enjoy our outing without undue stress. Thank you, Tony, for playing mother hen this week. I hope it did not adversely affect your enjoyment of the event.

TO ALL BUDA ATTENDEES:  When you receive a statement from Tony please send your payment ASAP so that he does not have to ask a second time!!!

A special thank you goes out to Nick Leefe who delivered a wonderful presentation on Alwoodley. It was a special evening that will make this GCA.com event live forever in our memories.

Finally, congratulations to the All England team for their victory... as tainted as it was with the use of ROW players to field a team at Moortown. ;)

Can't wait for Buda Cup VI!!!

Cheers!

Please let me second Mike's kudos to Tony, who did a great job in herding the GCA cats over the three days.  Also to Sean Arble, who did the early heavy organisational lifting.  Outside of the golf (of which we will hopefully hear more--including pictures for the hard-of-reading types like FBD...) the overall ambience was terrific.  The Headingly Lodge Hotel was perfect.  Excellent rooms, each overlooking a famous cricket pitch, and cheap!  That Yorkshire arranged for a 4-day county match to be played during our stay was a bonus.  The biggest bonus, however, was the fact that we arrived in Leeds on the first night of "Freshers Week" for the local universities.  It was just a medium length par-5 from our hotel to the center of student drinking and partying activity.  Having one's apres-golf in the middle of hundreds of fresh-faced and often scantily clad 18-19 year old young women was a tough job, but somebody had to do it, and it was us!

Who cares who won the match?

Thanks to Sean and Tony for doing the hard work! It was good to see everyone at Alwoodley and meet some new faces too. I was very sorry I had to miss Nick's presentation - though it sounds like Moortown was a good day to miss?! Hope you had better luck at Ganton Tony?

As I look out my London office window on a truly dismal Monday morning it looks as if golf may never be played again!
