Buda Cup Train Advice
« on: August 30, 2007, 02:15:16 PM »
I need some train advice...

I'm playing golf with Joe Fairey at Royal Birkdale following the Buda Cup on Saturday 22 Sept. We are not teeing off until around 2:00PM. Joe and I are planning to book a room for Saturday night... he is flying back to the US on Sunday morning from Manchester, I am taking the train back to London on Sunday morning.

Here is my question... I have done research on the web for train schedules and prices. It seems I can catch the train at either Crewe or Manchester for a direct trip to London. The difference is that a cheap 1st class ticket from Crewe is about 1/2 the cost of a standard ticket from Manchester. Would it be just as convenient for us to book a room near Crewe and Joe drop me off at the station there before driving to the Manchester airport? I don't want to cause him an unnecessary inconvenience.

What are your thoughts? Are there other options that I'm overlooking?

Thanks for your help!

Sean, I guess my question is... how long would it take to drive from the Crewe station to the Manchester airport?

Also, are the Manchester train station and airport near each other?

There are any number of inexpensive train connections from Manchester Airport to Crewe. You don't need to book in advance. Book a hotel at Manchester Airport and forget all the other options.  You have the business of dropping off a hire car etc.  You could do worse than booking in to the Manchester Airport Premier Travel Lodge http://www.premiertravelinn.com/pti/home.do?rw.cm=,PPC
which is actually in Wilmslow, from which there are many more trains to Crewe.

Mark,

As it happens, I'm booked in the Premiere Travel Inn in Cheadle. Is that particularly less convenient to the airport than the one in Wilmslow?

As I recall I chose it because it's nearish the airport and convenient to the route I'll be taking down from Great Ayton on Sunday evening. I think there are also a few generic restaurants and whatnot colocated with it, it's been a couple months since I made the reservation.
