Thendara Golf Club

Nestled in the Western Adirondacks in Thendara, NY (just south of Old Forge) is this very fun, very playable mature 18 hole course. The front nine was designed by Donald Ross (some might call it an anemic Ross, I call it spartan) and, thanks to those in charge, remains more open than not, with some very interesting, smallish, target greens. It has two par 5's under 440 yards, so if you are going to score, get it done on this nine. I particuarly like the second and ninth greens. The ninth is a difficult one shotter to a large reverse punch bowl green. The second is a smaller green with severe undulations, which suits this short par 5. If I had to be critical of one thing, it would be the bunkering, which appeared very inconsistent.

It's an entirely different story on the back. Designed by Russell Bailey (when I don't know), it's nearly entirely tree-lined with narrow fairways. You know you're in the Adirondacks ... plenty of fir trees, 4 holes that bring the Moose River into play and you're almost certain to see deer in the woods. 12 is a fine downhill par 3 that hugs the river and all things (including tee shots) seen to go that way. 13 is a difficult par 4 and 18 is a stout finishing par 4 to an uphill green.

About $40 to play -- a fine value, IMO.

Any more info on Thendara?

I was looking for golf in the ADK region (Old Forge, NY), and the Ross pedigree interested me.

Photos found with Google look really nice....
