creating new holes
« on: August 17, 2007, 12:40:24 AM »
The first time I started thinking about golf course architecture was when I worked at a course in college.  After the shop closed, we would rush out to play as many holes as possible before getting all of the carts put up.

One of the things we started doing to make things more interesting was creating new golf holes by playing to a different green than the one intended.  Sometimes we just created really interesting par 3s, other times a hole became a par 9.  I don't get a chance to do this anymore, but my eye still often notices new hole possibilities.

Anyone else do this?

Hi John!

Playing late in a summer evening from the far reaches of our course back to the 18th green was a sport for a few of us when I was a kid and great fun. Picking the right time to play over the trees was very strategic. Like a mega version of course management.

In December, my club holds a members "Cross Country" tournament.  Last year the course was set up as follows:

Hole #1 - 1st Tee to 4th Green - 581 yards
Hole #2 - 5th Tee to 7th Green - 156 yards
Hole #3 - 6th Tee to 8th Green - 487 yards
Hole #4 - 9th Tee to 1st Green - 161 yards
Hole #5 - 2nd Tee to 3rd Green - 413 yards
Hole #6 - 4th Tee to 6th Green - 173 yards

(this past year December was particularly warm, so we were able to play regular greens instead of temporaries).
