Women's Open at TOC
« on: July 30, 2007, 11:20:27 AM »
I am really looking forward to this event...first time for the ladies there, and with the shorter distance they hit the ball a lot of the bunkers will actually be in play for them!

not sure how long the course will be set up for them

Annika seems to be playing well again, Inkster too...be interesting to see if a crafty old veteran will win there, and/or someone with a lot of links experience...
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

The course will be just over 6,600 for them.  We're in Fife at the weekend so my wife and eldest son are going.
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

lpga.com lists the course as 6638 yards long and par 73.

I suspect that means the road hole will be listed as a par 5 on their cards.

Annika seems to be playing well again

Annika has also played the course in competition before winning the St Rule Trophy in 1990.

According to the LPGA website, the course will be 6,638 yards and play to a par of 73. Are they making 17 a par 5?

Oops . . . little late on the trigger and just saw the other posts.

I am really excited to watch the women "play" their way around TOC. I'm especially interested in watching the lines of play chosen by the players. I think I'll learn more about the course watching this event than I have learned watching any number of men's events held their.

Paula Creamer was doing a stint commenting yesterday and mentioned how eager everybody was to play TOC.  She mentioned the Road Hole by name as the one she was most looking forward to.

Keep an eye on Charlotte Mayorkas.  She has a good eye for architecture, hits it a long way and has a solid overall game for a rookie on tour.  I think the combination will serve her well.

I'll keep my eye on Natalie Gulbis thank you ;).

With that said, I look forward to them playing TOC as well. The bunkers will certainly be more in play for them and I think it's a shame they are playing #17 as a par 5. I think if they played it as a par 4, more players would risk trying to hit the green in two instead of laying up. Not that I know any of them will be laying up, but I am sure a lot will.

As a par 4 they would likely feel compelled to move the tees up (if they can be...), as a 5 they will play the same tees the men do and take their risks when they can, don't you think?

It was originally a par 5. Technology has changed the play of the hole. This is part of the reason many of us like to watch the ladies play, because it is a game we are familiar with. Personally, I doubt I would ever attempt to play the road hole as two shotter in competition. Now if I played there a lot for practice, I wouldn't mind having a go at the green in two from time to time.

I bet we'll see one or two of these ladies taking a swipe at the green in two this week...

How long is the Road Hole?  470?  Plenty of the women can reach it in two.  I think many will lay up because the green is  such a tough target rather than lack of distance.

I am sure we will see one or two go for it, but I would rather see most of them go for it. If it was a par 4, most would go for it no matter what. As a 5, they will only go for it if they hit the perfect drive. To me, that is not exciting.

Who wants to watch Goosen lay up on #13 at Augusta? Boring. Make that a par 4 and he won't lay up either.

Jim,

Tell me about the men skinny dipping their second shots up to the front edge of the green every time they play there...I call that a lay up as well. Come Sunday when you can't lay up it's great to watch, and it will be for the Women as well...

It takes to great shots for me to reach the front edge in two, thank you very much.

How will they cut the fairway there?  IIRC, two years ago during the men's tournament, the fairway was like a ribbon once you got out a fair distance.

At the narrowest point the fairway is 10-15 yards wide but I doubt  five women in the field could reach that length (even with a little wind behind).  The rough on the right at that point is very thick.  To be short of it leaves about 120-130 to the front up to 170 to the pin.

I caddied in Final Qualifying yesterday on The New.  We missed out by one shot after we had a triple bogey train wreck on 17  (190 yard Par 3).

There was a playoff 14 women for 8 spots and 4 alternates.

I believe that proper caddy speak is:

As an aside, who has the better green-reading technique?

Camilo Villegas?

or Paula Creamer?

I started another thread, but to avoid duplication will post this here:

I wanted to start a discussion on how we think the women will interface with TOC.  Specifically I'd like to break it down to three components: Strategy off the tee, playing out of bunkers, and putting on the greens.  By all means please feel free to add more components that are applicable.

1)  Strategy off the tee - As we have seen by watching the men every 5 years, they often can bomb right over many of the bunkers that will be in play for the women.  That being said, will the women try to play down the right side of many of the holes, bringing the OB in play, but taking the bunkers out of play?  And with many of the tee shots being blind will this throw them off thier normal routine as the US courses they play don't employ nearly as many of these types of shots.  Will we see the longer hitters laying up to avoid some of the bunkers with <gasp> irons?  Keeping it left is the basic premise to playing TOC, will this bring more bunkers into play for them? How much creativity off the tee do you envision or will the distance, approx 6600 yards, mean they will need to at least hit 3 woods to get shorter irons into the greens?

2)  Bunkers - Its pretty fair to say that the women rarely play courses on tour with extreme bunkering like TOC.  Will finding a fairway bunker mean almost a 1 stroke penalty with an almost guranteed chip out?  Or will the longer hitters still be able to hit lofted enough clubs to get somewhere down near the green?

3)  Putting on the greens - I've read that the courses the women regulary play have much tamer greens than what the men are used to.  Do we expect to see many 3 putts at TOC where the greens are massively undulating?  Or perhaps will we see players intentionally playing to the alternate green to gain better angles into some of the nasty pin locations? Number 11 could lead to some interesting putts especially if they get above the hole.

Any thoughts

Good article in Golfweek about the switch at 17 to a par 5.

They're getting there in two with a 7 wood all the way to a wedge depending on the wind.
