How Many Dead Guy Courses Have You Played
« on: July 18, 2007, 03:15:58 PM »
The ranking of dead architects got me thinking about how many dead guy courses I've actually played.  Even though it's probably a small number for this group, I was surprised to come up with 27:

Ross (9)
CBM/Raynor/Banks (8)
Tillinghast (6)
Fowler (2)
Trent Jones (2)

The Fowlers were both courses at Walton Heath, which I hadn't even thought about until I saw the dead guys rankings.

I come up with 24 courses by 12 dead guys, although almost certainly my top-of-head list omitted a handful of courses. I'll edit them in later as they come to mind. Of course a few of these dead guys are a couple ranks below the big names (George Cobb?) and some of them are not Old dead guys (Strantz, Trent Sr.).

D. Ross (7 courses played)

Pine Needles
Mid-Pines
Athens CC
Camden CC
Holston Hills
Southern Pines
Granville

A. MacKenzie (3.5 courses played)

Pasatiempo
Cypress Point
Palmetto (1/2)

M. Strantz (4 courses played)

Tobacco Road
True Blue
Caledonia
MPCC Shore

E. Maples (1 course played)

Columbia CC

H.K. Leeds (0.5 course played)

Palmetto (1/2)

H. Fowler (2 courses played)

Walton Heath Old
Walton Heath New

L. Purves (1 course played)

Littlestone

W. Park, Jr. (1 course played)

Huntercombe

R.T. Jones, Sr. (1 course played)

Spyglass Hill

G. Cobb (1 course played)

Fripp Island Ocean Point

J. Braid (1.5 courses played)

Walmer & Kingsdown
Royal Cinque Ports (1/2)

H. Hunter (0.5 course played)

Royal Cinque Ports (1/2)

This is hard to determine because I would think of Bill Diddel in the ODG group.  And I have probably played close to fifty places in Indiana that he is supposed to have touched.  Also I have played about 20 Maxwell courses.  Now if you count walking courses that number grows to about 40.

Aside from those two off the top of my head I think these would be the numbers.

RTJ (2) unless you count some renovations he did
Bendelow (3 or 4)
Ross (5)
Alison/Colt (1)  Not sure which way Milwaukee would be counted
Mackenzie (3)  Duh, I almost forgot about the work he did with Maxwell
Flynn (1)
Langford (2)
Tillie (2) Both in Oklahoma
Raynor (1)

This will be interesting to see how many people have seen a variety of designers or if they are a bunch of onesie-twosies (sp) or if they focus on one guy.  The results could be very geograpically biased towards a certain architect like mine because Diddel was based in Indiana.

Ironic that you asked this question today.   Earlier in the day I was curious as to how many vintage courses I'd played and I counted through my list to find that I'd played 201 courses built before 1950.

Just off the top of my head:

Ross: Pinehurst #1, #2, #4, #5, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Southern Pines, Holston Hills, Hyde Park CC, Inverness

Crump: Pine Valley

RTJ: Spyglass, Point 'o Woods

Egan: Pebble Beach

Wilson: Coldstream CC

Raynor: Camargo

Strantz: Tobacco Road, Tot Hill Farm

I've played a lot of places in Scotland/England (most of the Open rota)but have no idea who designed any of them. I might have played more here but can't remember.

Living and playing the vast majority of my golf in the UK I would guess nearly all of the courses I've played were by architects no longer with us!

2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

I'd have to go add it up, but I'm guessing at least 200, maybe close to 250 of the 600-something I've played.

I have no idea how many courses I've played but I would guess of the courses I have played, 90-95% or so are Dead Guy Architect designs, about the same percentage of books read by dead authors versus live ones.
