2007: Thursday July 19th is Bethpage
« on: July 17, 2007, 09:20:34 PM »
Black's best day to play.  The course could very well be in absolute US Open conditioning.  Currently, the greenside rough is very much US Open standard rough--this is no exageration.  Currently, the right greenside rough on #8 is about 8-10 inches and scary thick--thick enough to risk a fried egg in the greenside bunker after my worst approach iron ever in competition instead of risking the ball shooting across the green into this hellacios rough!  In addition, if the fairway rough is not cut, it will be around 5-6 inches--it is as thick and strong as rough can get.   As for the greens, they are perfect and were running 11 today.  So those of you who would love to experience what US Open conditions are like, you must try to play the Black on Thursday July 19th!

Robert,

Tempting...BPB w/ brutal rough, or a root canal....it's a toss up.....I better keep my appointment with my dentist.

I agree with Joe.

Why go to Bethpage under those conditions when I can go to my dentist or schedule my colonoscopy. Even for the local pros why not try to showcase their talent and not embarass them?

The parks dept. has it all wrong with their maintenance of BB.  It reminds me of the difference in playing Shinnecock Hills before the Open and months later after the rough had been mowed and fairways expanded back where they belong. One was a torture chamber where lost balls with forecaddies and "free drops as a local rule" ruined the experience and the next a total joy and fun to play.

Put Bethpage's fairways back where Tillinghast intended for proper strategies!!!!!!!

Svoboda Leads at Bethpage
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Andrew Svoboda, a 27-year-old professional playing out of Winged Foot, posted a three-under-par 68 to take the early lead at the 30th New York State Open at the Bethpage Black Course. Svoboda holds a one-shot lead over Chris Damiano of Westchester Hills Golf Club. They were the only players under par on the 7,241-yard course.

Dr Gene

Make sure you sterilize your instruments.  Am I penciled in for the root canal or will you be performing the colonoscopy?  ;D

Looks like no golf today with the storms so I imagine Thursday will now be the final day of the tournament.

I LOVE Bethpage Black but there is no  joy in playing under those conditions.  Give me Eastward Ho and a bit of wind, Friars Head or Yale any day.

Due to at least 2 inches of rain that has just ended, the NY State Open has been postponed until tomorrow which will push back the tournament until Thursday.  So now Friday is the best day to play this course.  Those who do not want to experience these extremely difficult conditions--I understand.  Because it is only one day, it can't be that bad to get killed score wise--Anyone get upset shooting large numbers at RCD on a windy drizzly day?  Besides, I can say that there are very, very few courses in the US that are up to the Black's level of conditioning at this moment.  It really does not get much better.

Robert,

Believe me, I have no problem with the occasional high score. It's the hard work and, to me, the drudgery of hacking out of deep rough over and over. I find no pleasure in it, regardless of score.

Give me a lot of wind, but a chance to punch a driver off the deck and at least I'm having fun.

To go on a hike in an open meadow, or hacking my way through jungle with a machete...that's how I see the difference.

The State is providing the average New York golfer a great public service by maintaining the course in the condition it does ???

Maybe Phil Young knows the answer? Who makes the decision to maintain the Black course so difficult?
