'Vista' course at Grossinger's
« on: July 15, 2007, 10:57:56 AM »
Tomorrow I'm heading over to play the Joe Finger course at Grossingers and I saw that they have a nine holer that was either built or redesigned by AWT. Might fit the bill for an emergency nine, anyone know what it's like?

The 'Monster' course at the Concord Resort is getting an overhaul  and they may be hiring Rees Jones to handle the work, although they say that they aren't looking to redesign it, just freshen up the  bunkering, irrigation systems, take care of the drainange problems, etc..

My understanding is that the original nine was built by the first Greenskeeper, Andrew Salerno in 1928.

As of 1931, the course was still only 9 holes.

Tillinghast came on board there around 1936 and probably did mostly reconstruction...I'm not sure if the course ever became more than 9 before 1970.

William Mitchell was there in the late 50s and then Joe Finger seems to have done considerable work around 1970, likely adding the full 18 hole course.

JMorgan,
The 'I' that's going is four, but perhaps some other time.
The OMR is rt 209 today?

Mike,
Thanks.
One of the guys playing teaches photography so maybe I can talk him into taking some shots of the course.

Jim,

I hope Philip Young weighs in here with anything he might know.

Mike,
Me too.
I probably posted this too late to catch his eye but I only read about the vista course's flirtation with AWT while downloading a scorecard for one of the guys who has never been there.

Oh well.

Jim,

Let's flag him down.

You can start by changing the title to, "Hey Phil Young, where the hell are you when we have Tillinghast questions??!?!?"

Jim K:

If time allows you may want to play a round at Tarry Brae in South Fallsburgh. This is one of the better Bill Mitchell courses I've played and generally is very modest in the fees department.

Frankly, the entire Catskills area is very depressing and one whose monike is still about years ago when DiMaggio was swatting balls at Yankee Stadium and when Mel Torme was singing and Shecky Greene were telling jokes at the renowned (but dated) hotels there.

Didn't get to see the Vista course, time wouldn't allow for it. The Big "G" course will be next to undergo a refurbishing after the Concord comes back in play. I'm not going to bore anyone by going into a long description, suffice it to say that at the twilight rate you will not be disappointed, especially on the back nine. Just one observation, there are more flashed bunkers, with convex faces, than you can shake a stick at. No plugs, but you better be a good bunker player, or better yet, avoid them.

Scott,
Concord's plans for the resort, as a whole, are massive. They probably feel the need to add the name of a living architect to that of Joe Finger, if for nothing else than to create some buzz.

Matt,
Although I haven't been there in a few years, I used to play TB once or twice a season. WM built enjoyable courses.
