Way, Way OT - Why Kit-Kat bars in GB&I taste different!
« on: July 11, 2007, 01:05:19 PM »
The NY Times today has an interesting article about how chocolate candy bars are formulated in the UK vs. in the USA. There is a reason they do taste different!

www.nytimes.com/pages/dining/index.html

Look for the "The World's Best Candy Bars" article.

Could be the same reason Coca Cola tastes different in Mexico than the USA.  Cane sugar vs. high fructose corn syrup. Es possible?

Yes, and Galaxy makes the British version of Cadbury taste like Hersheys.

I have a gut feeling that buying candy from the woman in the picture would be funding Al-Qaeda.  I hope she is not married to a Doctor.

As long as we're slingin' it on food, and since you're here, Mike Benham, have you given Shiner Hefeweizen a shot? Awesome!

David it was great to finally play together last weekend. I was a Mars bar man when in the UK till I read the article. I may have to go Kit Kat now.

Tiger -

Likewise, I am sure. Please let us know whenever you are headed out this way.

I am a fan of the dark chocolate-covered Bounty bars in the UK, which are like a Mounds bar, but covered in dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

The dark chocolate Bounty bars come in a red package. There is also a milk chocolate Bounty bar that comes in a blue package.

Whatever we do right with chocolate, we do wrong with adopted foreign beers.

The phrase "brewed under licence in the UK" is code for, "Was good. Not any more". I'm not sure an American would recognise Budweiser as brewed in the UK.

Sure Jeffrey...the Budswiller is found in the Loo after proper filtration from Guinness or a quality bitter.

David,

As I wipe of the drool, I'm reminded of the wonderful Scottish shortbread.  I always remember to bring some back for the kids.
(Yeah, sure, the kids) ::)

Jim,

In the world of true quality beers Guinness is entry level at best..  I find it pretty thin without much punch to it...   ;) :D

As for Budweiser...I have a Bud tap in my house...its called the kitchen sink..  8)

Hershey makes Kit-Kat in the USA.

So - what do you know about the courses at the Hershey resort (which is owned by Hershey foods/chocolate) ?   ;D

David,
You see, in the old days, this topic wasn't off-topic. In fact it was right on topic.

However, I scoff at all of you. Go ahead and let the CoCo Bean be your God.......

Well, as long as we are off topic...

While I think making ethanol from corn is a pretty short term solution that is only good in that it gets things moving in the biofuel industry until better solutions like using algae to make ethanol or biodiesel take over, this horrible substance known as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may go away from our sodas and candy bars if making ethanol from corn drives up corn prices enough that HFCS is no longer cost effective versus real sugar.

Coca Cola made the switch from sugar to HFCS in 1985, the same year they got rid of the old Coke (made with sugar) and replaced it with New Coke using a different formula, then brought back Coke Classic (old formula, but using HFCS instead of sugar)  I still can't figure out if it was almost the biggest marketing mistake in history or a great way to cover up a change that people would have otherwise noticed.
