Am I too critical?
« on: July 11, 2007, 09:19:54 AM »
Just because it upsets me that Golf Magazine shows a picture that they call #16 at Ballybunion when it fact it is #16 at The Cashen course does that make me too critical ?

And in a recent catalogue from one of the golf retailers they showed a picture which they labeled as Royal County Down. From all I know RCD doesn't have water on the left of the holes.

Well... obviously the Cashen course is part of Ballybunion Golf Club.  So if all they said was it's "Ballybunion", then yes, you are too critical.  But if they called it the Old course and it's really the Cashen, then no you're not, and some editorial flunky at thet magazine ought to be taken out and flogged.

Not at all...I'm still upset that both Golfweek and Digest got the name of The Riviera Country Club wrong.

 Tom,

Don't you assume the Old course when you hear "Ballybunion" just as you assume the Dunluce course when you hear "Royal Portrush"?

Michael:

No, I don't, although I understand that some people might.  If so, it's their loss... because in each case the lesser-famous course is pretty damn interesting and great in its own right.

So I have few issues with a hole from the Cashen being labelled as "Ballybunion."  OK in a perfect world they do say "Ballybunion-Cashen course."  But it won't bother me if they just say it's from Ballybunion, because after all, it is.

Mike, is this subject really worth a thread?  I agree with Tom Huckaby.  The course is a part of Ballybunion, they should have mentioned that it was the Cashen course but they didn't. You get upset by this?  I cannot imagine how you must get with more substantive matters such as the replanting of trees, poorly considered tees and other matters at your home club; let alone world events.  Come on, Mike.  This Golf Magazine issue does not require much if any emotional investment.  Let it go and gain a perspective.  Sheesh  ::)

It accompanied  a question in their Ask Joe section with the title "Ballybunion..Or Bust!"  about how to get tee times at Ballybunion and Lahinch. Do think maybe they wanted to play The Castle course at Lahinch?

World events can be very complicated and difficult to resolve so I understand that it can be tough to be successful, but you ought to get a picture right. There is no excuse and I am mad as hell about it.

Oh, BTW it has to do with gca as well. Isn't gca significantly visual? When someone sees that picture they don't know it was designed by an American architect and may not be much like the Ballybunion they desire to play.

Not as the first course, obviously.  But if they're smart and/or adventurous, they play it as a late afternoon 2nd round.. as I did.

 ;)

Hey, I get your point - it is sloppy work.  But in terms of things to get worked up about, well... put me down with Wayne here.

These pencil drawings upset me.  If you are going to steal an idea shouldn't you at least improve upon it?  http://www.golfweek.com/commentary/
