Crenshaw's hat is a big departure.
« on: July 08, 2007, 05:09:24 PM »
In today's game with so many sponsorships, I find it refreshing that Crenshaw's hat is just Coore&Crenshaw.

Well, it's not generic, he's simply promoting his own company rather than someone else's. I have to say, in flipping back and forth between the Sr. Open and the AT&T, I didn't even notice. Always great to see Ben in contention, though!   :)

I don't think many marketing people would consider the simple names of two people in small type on a hat much of a sales pitch.

Actually the two names is a big leap from Ben's days with Buick:

I'm no expert, but I've got a marketing degree which I don't use on a daily basis and I would consider that hat to be a marketing effort.  Saying "it is just two names" is a bit oversimplifying the situation.  Proctor & Gamble would just be two words too.

That being said, nothing jumps off the screen quite like the gigantic polo man on Watson's chest this afternoon.

Yeah and Mickleson's visor is just "Bearing Point".

You guys need a fricking life.  It IS advertising. C&C get more passes around here than Scooter Libby at teh White House.

BTW, hat's off to little Ben for finishing second with a strong round whilst Watson choked like a python swallowing an elephant.  78 was pretty disappointing, TW.

Since Ben has worn other hats such as his "W" hat and a Friar's Head one in the past, I was interested in this one.But there was no way to see the writing on the television except for when he was interviewed at the end.

I figured I could elicit some comments like Dr. V's. You're the one that needs to lighten up Mr. Redanman ;D

The hat may be a marketing ploy, but I wonder how well it works.  Do C&C get more business because of it?  From the little I know of how architects get business, I would think the answer to that question is no.  Can anyone clarify?

Nice tournament by Ben, but it's possible his spotty and infrequent play over the last few years has resulted in no sponsor offering him enough to buy the space on the front of his hat.

Do we really think Ben is hoping to find his next client through advertising on his lid while playing golf? Would anyone that is going through the process of building a golf course not know of the success he and his company have had in the field? They might not get asked to bid on every project that comes up, but I guarantee it's not from anonymity...

Why do they put Bud ads in Busch Stadium?  There just might be someone in Moscow that hasn't heard of Sand Hills.  I just wonder if he back charged the company for the space as I have seen people do for putting magnets on the side of their car.  Pisses you off when you are a silent partner.

I am sorry to say that the C&C hat is not available on the Sand Hills web site but here are some wanna be deals of the century.  These could go right next to your Master's gear:

Lets see, John, how that might play out...

Russian billionaire Michael Borchovsky, speaking to his planning committee: "I vant a golf course at our luxury hotel in ze Caucasus.  Who vill build it?  Jack Nicklaus?  Or zat one Trump always uses, Fazio is his name?"

Borchovsky assistant Boris Sokolov: "Misha, NO!  I vas vatching ze Senior Open, and I saw zis golfer named Ben Crenshaw, and he vas vearing a hat, and his hat had the words "Coore&Crenshaw" on it.  Ve should hire HIM."

I'm kind of missing the connection between a hat with that name on it and golf course architecture.

Other than his playing partners I don't think anyone could read the words on the hat.I think it shows a guy who doesn't want to make a quick buck. Is there something so odd about that that it isn't believable?

Ah Mayday, we are discussing this on GCA, so obviously SOMEONE else was able to read the hat. Maybe it was reverse psychology by the Brand Management Manager at C&C's Marketing Department to make it small so that we would be more curious about it!!

PS. I doubt Ben is in the design business for the money. He could make money a bunch of other ways with his resume and personality. As Bruce Lietzke, "I have no appreciation for golf history. We roomed together a long time ago. I would look over and see him reading a golf book and he'd be crying. I don't think I ever cried over a car magazine."

A few years ago, Paul Stankowski was playing on Tour with no hat or visor, or logoed shirt - I thought it was a good look, though it was likely just some sort of statement that he was looking for sponsorship.

Ben probably switched because someone was complaining on here a couple years ago about the W hat. :)
