Toughest stretch of consecutive par 4s
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:20:09 AM »
Yesterday I worked the International Final Qualifier for The Open Championship that was held at Oakland Hills.  As played by the pros, the stretch from 4 through 8 on the South course consists of 5 par 4s.  I can't recall seeing 5 par 4s in a row before and certainly never one where they are all so tough.

I know that 8-11 at Pebble is a pretty good stretch of 4, but can anyone come up with 5 in a rough that come close to the stretch that comes close to the ones at OH-South?

I was on holes 2-3-4 & 7 on the South course all day.  The course was setup very difficult with the rough up and the hole locations in tough spots.  Scores were not great, but there were more scores in 60s than there were at Oakmont.

One interesting score was JB Holmes' who supposedly bombed a drive on #16 and then spun three balls off the green into the pond on the way to a 10.  Then in the afternoon on the North course, he drove it to about 3 feet on the 319 yard 15th hole and made eagle.  He missed the cut with a 79-69.

I have not been to Oakland Hills to compare, but #'s 8 through 12 at Huntingdon Valley are really strong holes...great variety of distances and directions and elevations...

The last 5 holes on the Blue Course at the Berkshire are par 4s and are a pretty good test of golf.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

The lengths of the 5 holes at Oakland Hills are:

4- 446
5- 490
6- 387 (with, maybe, the toughest green of the 5)
7- 449
8- 491

8 is a par 5 from the member's tees, but the club's scorecard lists it as a 4 from the back tees.

The end of WFW's back nine is as tough as any.  HVCC is cupcake by comparison. ;) ;)   I'll be able to compare to Oakland Hills late in the month. ;)

True...but can you produce a scorecard with #16 listed as a par 4?

1,2,3,4,5 at portmarnock are pretty tough, 3 and 4 especially

hole 1 - 405 yards (estuary down the right hand side)
hole 2 - 411 yards (tough raised green)
hole 3 - 398 yards (very tight hole with tough dune all down the left and the estuary all down the right)
hole 4 - 475 yards (stroke index 1 - tough approach and green)
hole 5 - 442 yards (fully blind drive)

The stretch at Royal Troon from 9---13 is pretty darn tough.
Usually into the prevailing wind, this stretch is usaually considered the meat of the golf course.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned 8-10 at Pebble.

Next year at Torrey Pines South:

#4, 490 along the cliff
#5, 460 with a sloping fairway
#6, 500 (?) with an unusual teeshot angle
#7, 470 (?) dogleg around the canyon

Inverness #14-17 probably aren't the very hardest, but they deserve a mention at least.

If we fudge Longmeadow number ten (485) into a par four, then 8,9,10,11,12 should be included in this conversation.

I'm with MWP - Troon's 9-13 is a damn tough stretch of P4's.

In a southerly, I find 13-16 at NSWGC a tough group as well despite # 15 being downwind in such a breeze.

If we are fudging just a little, then 14-18 at  Merion East wins hands down. #17 might as well be a par 3.75-4.25, don't ya think? :o

Seth Raynor's Morris  County in  New Jersey, numbers 7-10. #7 (452) has a dramatic approach into a bowled green. #9(430)  has a fabulous uphill approach to an   artistic  terraced green. 8th is a  lovely driving hole over a deep valley.

I realize these are two three-hole groups, but 9-10-11 and 13-14-15 at Bethpage Red are very difficult.  All play a minimum of 400 yards, and, although basically flatter holes, have different shot requirements (draws and fades).  Not including the 8th hole in the first group, as it is a little easier par or birdie at 370-380, but, when the wind blows hard, it is a difficult green to hit.

I agree with Troon being tough to top. I also respect Paul Turner not to blow smoke but i have not played Lytham. Olympic, Champions and Spyglass all have long tough man sized pars 4's which test any golfer but I do not think any of them have 5 in a row.

Wasn't it Palmetto in Aiken where Ben Hogan use to practice for the Masters? Sighting it for the strength of the Par 4's. I don't recall how consecutive.

I don't know of a tougher sequence than this!  Smash mouth golf in the extreme with barely a hint of charm in the lot.  You flat belies can have the entire back 9 so far as I am concerned.
