I was looking at the course reviews and noticed the retaining walls on the 16th and 17th holes at Cypress Point.

I know they had to do something re: the erosion and I certainly don't know what choices they had but am I being too picky in thinking that the walls look a little out of place?

You have this rough, jagged edge of coastline created over millions (?) of years by nature and the retaining walls look like something out of a new subdivision entrance

Was there any chance to use a product that might have blended better?  Just asking.

I played down there quite a bit when the work was being evaualated and performed and the they put quite a lot of thought into it.   In the end, the durability issue won out.  In my mind it looks better than what they did on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach but it is a little polished.

I will say its consistent at Cypress.  The entire course (not just 16 & 17) is over manicured.

I was there a couple of weeks ago.  There is a lot of artificial rock work done there, too ... a very high percentage of the coastline was rebuilt, so the parts that aren't walls in the photos fooled you.  

However, it is difficult to get a natural look when you are trying to restore something that's now vertical.  They wanted all the ground on top, and the bottom has eroded away and the authorities won't let them go back out into the ocean to reclaim it.

Looking closely at Cypress Point is a great lesson in the awesome power of the Pacific Ocean.  If not for the walls, it is likely there wouldn't be a 15th, 16th or 17th hole in another 25-50 years -- they were having serious erosion issues.

Funny you mentioned the manicured thing--I thought the bunkers look softer/rounder than I had remembered from other pictures.

Thanks--I've only seen pictures and it is stunning.  I had never noticed the walls before.  I know firsthand how destructive flowing water can be coming from a small stream so I can barely imagine what it would be like to have the Pacific hammering away at your course 24/7!!

Thanks for that explanation--I figured there had to be some serious legal/environmental issues as well.
