Incredible! The golf course doesn't look that bad either.

It doesn't look much like a links course.  I don't mean that as any sort of put down--to me, it just doesn't looks like a links, faux or otherwise.

"On a golf course, i-in Washington,
stood a lonesome pine,"

Now that's what I call a GOOD golf course tree.

Please tell me there's a Hole called 'Sentinel' or 'Lone Warrior'.

I just noticed - there's even a RAILWAY!!!!

Nice going, John S. and the Boys!

the railway to the right of #16 more than makes up for anything lacking, it looks great!

Love the railway.

No fair on the rest, the photographer clearly can't take a bad photo.

Martin, it's not a pine, it's a Douglas fir!

The active train line is so great. When I was there trains were running and it added so much, along with folks on the walking trail. Made it feel like we were in Scotland.

It's not that difficult to create a good image when you are given the opportunity to photograph a golf course like Chambers Bay. It is a wonderful facility in a beautiful setting that only will improve with time. It's more than worth the price of admission and should provide memories that will last until you play it again. IMHO.

Martin,

The hole the fir stands behind is named "Lone Fir".

Brad,
I couldn't tell from the pics the exact genus/species/cultivar so plumped for the generic 'Pine' solely to allow me to use the old Laurel and Hardy song lyrics!

Are we to assume that you have been more - ahem - intimately acquainted with said arboreal specimen???

What kind of trains use the line? Do tell me they're still using Steam in the PacNW!?!?!

Garland,
LONE FIR!!! Fan-bloody-tastic!!!!

cheers,
FBD.

No Martin,

Brad is just a quick learner. He was corrected for calling it a pine too.

Brad's review in Golfweek suggested lightning protection for the (fir).  If I'm right, Seattle almost never gets thunderstorms, does it?

But now, after seeing the fir, it does need protection.

It's stunning.

So - are there PHL-SEA nonstops?

Yes, lightning is rare in the Seattle area, however there was a storm on Sunday in which 3 people were injured from separate strikes.  Doesn't happen often and generally catches people off guard.

PS: US Airways has 2 non-stops a day to Seattle.  Chambers Bay is probably about 40 minutes from the airport.

Andrew,

Our pictures just don't pop in the same way... :'(

I give this course another good wet winter and a glorious spring time for all the dunes to gow in past the Cat tracks and it will look like it has been there for years!

Aidan,

Have you ever taken a picture while looking up?  I would love to see a balls eye view before it was hit.

Occasional lightening does strike in the area but rarely like the monster stuff in the midwest.......however the lone fir stands on the shores of the Narrows in Puget Sound.

Anyone ever see the film of a collapsing suspension bridge?   Galloping Gertie or her offspring are visible only from that spot on Chambers Bay.  Wind in winter gathers to the south and then is forced through the narrows leading to some pretty exciting storms and high winds.

Hopefully Pierce County officials have a policy with LLoyds of London for wind loss of that tree.

Cos,

Please tell me they named a hole after Tubby, the poor pooch that went down with the bridge:

No Tubby hasn't been yet honored on the course.

But then Rapoport once suggested over an after dinner cigar that CB be named "Broken Bridge".  Alas the county officials went for the safer Chambers Bay.

They could have opted for several names that would have made for better shirts and hats....bootleggers beach would also have worked!  I guess they didn't want to go that edgy.

Also Ryan Moore announced in this mornings paper a skins game for October with Michael Putnam, Bubba Watson and Aaron Baddeley.
