One round: Cuscowilla or Great Waters
« on: June 27, 2007, 06:53:16 PM »
Just a quick question.  I think I already know the answer, but would appreciate confirmation.

I have time for one round while on business and have a choice of Great Waters at Reynolds Plantation or Cuscowilla.  Which one to choose?

Daryl, I haven't played GW but I have played a bunch at Cuscowilla and consider it a modern classic.  Great playing angles, huge daunting greens, and a couple of to die for short par 4s.

Having played both, in my opinion it is not a close question.

Cuscowilla is the must play in the area. Bill summarizes its virtues well.

With the full disclosure that John Kavanaugh once said that I have more Homer in me than Marge Simpson . . . it's Cuscowilla baby!  Although you should definitely try to see Long Shadow if possible.  I've only seen picutres but can't wait to see it in person.

Play Cuscowilla, but you are asking the wrong question, IMO.  See paragraph three...

I have played both within the last 6 weeks, and as KBanks says, it ain't close.  And I like Great Waters a lot!  Cuscowilla is just a great, great golf course; a "modern classic", as Mr. McBride terms it, is NOT an overstatement.

I'll give you a heads up, though.  If you are going to be in that area, make the effort to play a second round not at Great Waters but at Long Shadow.  The back nine is now open, and you'll be able to tell people that you've already seen it when the course starts getting national attention, which will happen soon.  In fact, if you have already played Cuscowilla, I would seriously consider making Long Shadow the one round choice.  It is that good; wait and see.

Thanks for all the feedback.  I will definitely play Cuscowilla and am now trying to add a day to the trip to include Long Shadow.

I have played both and the vote will not change on the GW side. Play Cuscowilla early and often.

I have a friend who is a member at Great Waters and we played there for a couple of years.

After Cuscowilla opened I never returned to Great Waters. And it wasn't because I thought GW was a bad course. It's a very good course.

But Cusco is special.

I think Great Waters is by far the best Reynolds Plantation course, and I really enjoy playing it.  That said, I'd play Cuscowilla if forced to choose between the two.

BTW, my friend who belongs to GW told me they confirmed they are going to do some major work on the course, probably begining late this fall.  Doesn't sound like there will be any changes to the course - mostly stuff related to conditioning - redoing the greens, tee boxes, etc.
