4,5,and 6 Dornoch, does it get any better
« on: August 28, 2002, 05:33:07 PM »
The world  gives 14(foxy) its applause but give me the run of 4 5 and 6 anyday. I love this series of holes, a medium 4, a short 4 and a short 3. It sounds easy when you put it that way. The fairway rules on 4 and 5. Take dead aim at the Duke of Sutherland Statue. The shot into the green gives a ground option but it takes local knowlege and courage to play it. The green is much bigger than it looks. 5 is an incredible driving hole. The traps on the right side of the landing zone with anything but a great shot being bound to find a home there. The shot to the green is one of my favorites only surpassed by 4 and 6. lol As goodale says on 6, hit the green stupid. I love holes like this which have the common characteristics with the Postage Stamp. Hit the green or make a high score while looking fairly benign from the tee.

Reading your little post here, I can almost breathe the salt air ...

thanks ;)

Yes, quite agree, but . . .

the 7th hole, among the new ones, along with 8-9-10-11 built in 1947, is in the wrong spot. How much better would no. 7 be if it were 40 feet to the right overlooking the dunes section of the course and your beloved sequence of 4-5-6? Instead it's stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no view of anything and thick gorse down both sides, making it the least characteristic hole at Royal Dornoch.

Brad you are so right. That is the biggest disappointment on the course. I big guy like me desrves a better fate after that climb. I wish the hole ran the dune or ridge line too.

It is not like #3 is too bad a hole either! Walking from the 2nd green and arriving on the 3rd tee, you get that wonderful view of most of the course, the coast line and the hills to the north. Just great!

Brad and John:

Don't you agree that that little bench on that long climb up to 7th tee is a wonderful place to rest and enjoy a wee dram?

I have a photo on my wall in a prominent spot of my brother and I enjoying a wee nip right on that bench!

On another thread I stated that the walk from 2 green to 3 tee was one of the best in golf. Dornoch is one of the greatest place to play I've ever been to. I'll agree with Brad in that 7 is a bit of a let down after the first six. However that is soon forgotten heading down 8 and then the spectacular return home. Is it possible to improve on a 10? I'd probably want to modify 7, 8, and 16 if it were my course.

True Story

I was playing Dornoch one day with Euan Currie (owner/barman of the Burghfield House Hotel) and two other friends.  As is Euan's wont, he carried along in his bag three 1-irons, a few other clubs, a full bottle of Macallan, 4 crystal glasses, a jug of water and a linen table cloth.  We planned to have a dram on the 7th tee to congratulate ourselves for having (hopefully) survived the climb from the 6th green.  As we walked up the brae we heard loud shouts from behind and looked around to see great glee and merriment on the 6th tee.  There had obviously been an ace.

On the 7th tee, Euan laid out the tablecloth, poured and we sat and sipped in the splendid isolation.  He then washed out our glasses, wiped them off and poured 4 more drams, just in time for the group behind to arrive on the tee.  We handed the drams to the fourball, as Euan said:

"Gentlemen.  It is a tradition here at Royal Dornoch that holes in one on the 6th are celebrated with a fine malt whiskey.  Congratulations!"

The group hesitated a moment, and then gave each other a look like “Gee, golf in Scotland really is different, Ralph!” emptied their glasses and gave thanks.  We then played off and left them happy and bemused in our wake.

That evening, in the bar, someone said to me:

“You wouldn’t believe what I saw in the tee box at the 13th today!”

“Could it have been an empty bottle of Macallan?”  I replied.

PS--Shooter, were you on this DG when I made my modest proposal to combine 7 and 8 into a 750-800 yard mother of all par 6's?  Think about it.

Great story! Did it really happen only once? ;D

One piece of info missing is that you probably played in 3;45 ?

Hmmm! Why didn't those foolish touristas pick up the trophy from the bunker. No doubt youan left it to be used as a plinth for the holed sphereoid.

P.s. when in scotland and you do come across an empty scotch bottle in a hazard, is it considered natural and therefore part of the course?

Paul, I man who also looks at the course from location to enjoy a wee dram perspective. Yes I agree about the bench half way up. I also love the bench near 3 tee too. It is truely a course to savor, study and enjoy. I may miss the Goodale affair but will play there next July and again the next september with Rich

I love Dornoch to death!

To your mind(s), just why is the 7th considered the hardest hole on the course (I think it is on the card)?  Other holes are more devilish to me (like #8).

Rich:

Is there a prevailing wind at RD that makes the playing of 'Foxy' a given, i.e., a tough as leather par?

Is the hotel off the first tee still offering dinner, bed and breakfast for seventy-five pounds?

When the hole handicaps were assigned at RDGC, the fariway on the 7th was about 40 yards narrower than today.  Also, from the back tees it is 465 or so, so trying to hit driver to a 320-30 yard landing area with soem sort of wind was about as arse-puckering as it could get.  It's very much easier now, particularly from the forward tees, but I managed to rack up a 10 in competition 2 weeks ago, so it still ain't easy.  Or, am I still crap...............?

Bob

No prevailing wind on the 14th that I know of.  It plays much harder downwind than into it.  In the latter case, you can have some hope of holding the green with a high cut 3-4 iron.  In the former case, trying to stop an 8-iron is nigh impossible--unless your name is Watson, whom I saw do so in 1981, putting the lie to the theory that you can bamboozle the top players with fast and firm, even with old wings nad old technology (or were those those quasi-legal Ram blades he was using then.....?).

Hey Rich, long time no correspond.  I'm not Shooter but in regard to the below:

Shooter, were you on this DG when I made my modest proposal to combine 7 and 8 into a 750-800 yard mother of all par 6's?  Think about it.

At this point RDGC is one hole short.  Any ideas on where the new hole would  be, or is this the first of your "non-traditonal" golf courses.

You could use the hotshot GCA search engine to pick up my posts of a couple of years ago......Naaaah....life is too short.....

My plan included extending 16 into a par 5 which finished up by the road to the right of the 18th green, and then using the current practice hole near there as a 190 shot into a green surrounded by whins to get you back to the 17th tee.  It gets you to 18 holes, par 70, with a few hundred more yards and it works.........and I would love to see the faces on the pros standing on what is now the 7th tee, looking at the card, seeing "777 yards, par 6" and 465 yards of fairway in front of them with no green in sight......

Sounds intriguing, but the look on my face would probably be more amusing as I confronted the same spectacle.  Not only a restorative whiskey but a packed lunch and assorted pharmaceuticals might be necessary.

Looking at my old scorecard I see that the new hole, provided it used the entire length of the existing 7 and 8 would be an even 900 yards--still a par 6 for the pros.  The course would be extended by about  300-400 yds, but I get a par of 72.

And the climb from the 6th to 7th would be fueled by knowing you were about to arrive at something unusual if not special.

You are right about the par 72.  My abacus was on the fritz yesterday.  I thikn the yardage would be slightly under 800 yards (taking hte direct route to the hole) because of the set back of the 8th tee relative to the 7th green.

So Rich did you ever play 7 & 8 as a single hole other than in your mind's eye?

And for Ralph Livingston or anyone elese who knows, what course is pictured in this thread as giving Dornoch a run for it's money?
