Nice to see some love for a great Ross course that is somewhat out of the mainstream. CCB will be hosting the 2027 USGA Women's Mid-Am and the 2032 USGA Men's Senior Amateur. CCB is a wonderful Ross course that was recently restored by Jim Nagle and Ron Force.
It's great to see the USGA going to some places that they have not been to in a very long time.

Good for Jim Nagle. He’s getting a lot of prestigious work - Buffalo, Manufacturers, Philly Country, Lancaster to name a few. He deserves it. There should be at least one more added to his resume, but that’s another story.

The diversity of terrain is an attribute that Ross took great advantage of. The quarry holes fit beautifully into the design and number six is a marvel. The finisher is terrific and provides a worthy ending to a great collection of holes. Country Club of Buffalo is on the first page of any Ross course list for me.

How does CCB compare to Niagara Falls Country Club, which is a nearby Tillinghast design?

IMO CCB is a lot better. I like NFCC but it doesn't live up to the Porter Cup history in my opinion. You can get run over by trucks going 60 MPH about 4 times while you are playing which doesn't add any charm to the course.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but NFCC is no longer a Tillinghast design. The 18th hole was a short four that was truncated into a mid-length par three. The holes along the gorge were lost to that b@stard Robert Moses, who inflicted irreparable harm on New York State. Robert Trent Jones the elder and Geoffrey Cornish also came in and undid Tilly's work. Finally, a new second hole was built (actually better than the original) to afford a short-game practice area.

What you have is a very nice course that is a hybrid of so many design styles. It is a true American classic. It is a wonderful host to the Porter Cup.

Many talk about the sixth hole at CCB as the podium's peak. It is one of four challenging 3s on the course. The most difficult is 16. The most scenic is 6. The most underrated is 8, and the most fun is 12. The first and eighteenth are on the western side of Youngs Road, and the remainder of the course lies to the east. Tunnels from 1>2 and 17>18 get you there and back again. The 17th hole is the only one that was not returned to its original, Ross trace. That's a story for another sort to tell, on another occasion.

In both championships, the stretch from 14-16 will determine the champions.
