Golf Courses in Movies
« on: June 11, 2007, 10:57:42 PM »
just finished watching the Thomas Crown Affair (1968)...what a great movie (much better than the remake).  There are scenes from Belmont CC in Mass and the polo match is played at Myopia

Also saw Banning in the past month (a great Robert Wagner movie about an assistant pro with a shady past).  Some scenes from Riviera #18

What other movies out there have scenes at some top courses?

Obviously the Bond "Goldfinger" has that fabled British course with a funny name.  It escapes me.

Furry Creek in British Columbia is site of the "San Francisco Open" in "Happy Gilmore" and hosted the Bob Barker punch-out scene.

Rolling Hills in Fort Lauderdale was used for "Caddyshack".  It has since been renamed after a renovation for Wayne Huizenga, who made it private.

John: I am fairly certain that the course in Goldfinger was Stoke Poges, or now, I believe it is called Stoke Park Golf Club.

Stoke Park has had numerous movies filmed there including: Bridget Jones' Diary, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Wimbledon.

I believe that the wedding scenes from American Pie 3 are of the Old Course at Half Moon Bay.

A Gentleman's Game features some great scenes of Rolling Green. It stars Gary Sinise. I bought the movie after seeing it on TV just so I could watch the course scenes and pause them. RG looks to be a truly great course.

The Greatest Game Ever Played was filmed at Kanawaki Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. It looks like a pretty good course and I believe it's a Ross. It seems to look enough like TCC to pull it off for the movie.

You can't go wrong with the locations used for Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius. TOC and Kingsbarns.

What Los Angeles muni are the guys playing in "Swingers"? It looks like an executive course. Is it Los Feliz Golf Course, or something?

How 'bout the golf course in Donnie Darko? Anyone know what that one is?

It is in fact Los Feliz.

Also, I think that Roosevelt #6 might be the hole that John Saxon has that scene in Enter The Dragon, but I've never really taken the time to check that out.

Curb Your Enthusiasm has used Woodland Hills, Hacienda and El Cabellerro.

What course did Michael Douglas cross in "Falling Down"  that movie where he went nutz and walked to Venice Beach for his kids Birthday? Was it Hilcrest?

Steve,

did you know that in Follow the Sun that all the playing scenes that are long distance shots are actually Hogan. Hogan didn't like Spence that much and almost stopped the film being made due to Hollywood doing there thing and making certain things up to improve on its sellability.

Which course was used for Caddy Shack?

Stoke Poges is a stone's throw away from the illustrious cinema/television Pinewood Studios.

 David Stamm,

I am terribly offended that you did not mention my cameo in  "A Gentleman's Game". For your punishment you need to find me in it. I appear as a "haughty country club " type who makes a face as the sleazy lawyer (David Zayas-sp) walks up to the club. It is at least 3/4 of the way into the film.

I'll definitely look at that scene again Michael. That lawyer was over the top, but had some amusing one liners. The description of the elephant shot was particularly unique!

Can we look for you in future cinema epics? ;) ;D

BTW, was it fun watching them film there?

I didn't know the Goldfinger scene was done at Stoke Poges.

I think, just think, that in the novel the course Fleming describes is Royal St. Georges/Sandwich...Fleming was a member there, I think. It's a fun read

The remake of Thomas Crown has a brief scene on the golf course where Pierce Brosnan's character makes a ridiculous bet on his bunker shot.  It was filmed at the St. Andrew's Golf Club in NY.

 David,

It was interesting to see how a movie is made. I think I spent 20 hours on site. The interior scenes were done at The Phila. Racquet Club. So, it was kind of cool to watch them run out of the member/guest gala into the parking lot.
It was also fun to watch the father deciding between a 4 iron and a 5 for a shot of 120 yards. BTW the kid never got the ball airborne!

The film went directly to tape/ disc , but we had a premier showing in Phila. that had many members in the audience.

Jordan, parts of it. I can remember the second hole at Colleton being used as the turning point for Juna's first good drive in his second round.
