Garden City country club (Travis)
« on: July 08, 2007, 06:44:10 PM »
This course has some fine holes and some charming gently rolling terrain.  keith  Foster  is working on restoring some  green surfaces. #2 # ,12,and !6 are especially fun. #2 (188yd)   features a  wavy  green   with  a sharp  drop  off  behind. #12 is a long  par five called Iwo Jima  that culminates with shot that must grab onto a green clinging to a summit. Worth a look also for some good tactical bunkering.
Anyone  been here ?

Doug's sarcastic way of saying that you are confusing Garden City Golf Club with Garden City Country Club.

Though one club is more famous, this is generally considered the best test of golf for the low handicap player and better in Garden City.  It suffers from a tight piece of property, being split by the LIRR, and too many cute well manicured pine trees. The greens complexes are awesome!

I played them both in the same week. One, was a dime a dozen country club for me The other was one of my favorite courses I have been able to play.

There are two different courses with that name?? Confusing. Forget my first post then.

thanks for the info on the country club  what did you think of  strech from  #2-#7 ? Are  #2 and  #12 among your favorite green complexes. Do you feel GCCC variety and challenge is equal to, or superior to Cherry Valley or Hempstead Golf Club  thanks for your help

I really think that it is the best course in Garden City.  It suffers from not having the aesthetics of GCGC.  However, the greens complexes have a lot more going on than at GCGC.  They are currently doing some work on the course.  I think Foster is the architect, but am not 100% certain.  Supposedly, a lot of trees are marked to be removed.

Robert:

I know I expressed my dissapointment in GCCC to you the other day but I must say the best in Garden City?  We're usually on the same page but not this time.  Out of 10 rounds I'd play 9 at Garden City Golf and one at the Country Club.  Note, I've not yet played Cherry Valley so can't factor that one in yet.
