David Miller, your post an mine makes me wonder... for those of us that do punt on playing a course based on price, where are our particular price break-points, or our personal lines in the sand?

I think I'll start a new thread to ask as a follow-up to punting in general.

RJ,

Each of the courses I mentioned and the entire state of Hawaii had price as a factor in me not playing.  My question to you would be if Bill Coore was at the counter when you were at Bandon and said that he needed a fourth, would have you paid and played?  I put a huge premium on who I play with.  I hope the people who I travel to play with from this site understand that I would not do so if I did not respect each and every individual at the outing.  I can punt on one bad apple.

The hardest punt of my golf life was last month, when I walked up at twilight to Bandon Resorts, asked if they had a twilight rate, they said all courses were open and I could tee off alone on any one of them, but at full freight.  I punted.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only guy on line here that will draw the line in the sand on a price.

I can only imagine how painful that must have been, Dick.

In which order did you punt them?

I almost punted Pasatiempo once when this fat guy with a shit-eating grin showed up on the 1st tee, but I'd already paid the green fee and chose the lesser of two hassles.....

John, I will try to be as honest with the answer with you and myself as I can be...  ;) ::) ;D

If Bill and Ben and Doak, or any one of them wanted to fill out a 4some with little ol me, I'd say no to about $250 (as I have now also posted on a new thread I started)  That day I walked up there last month, they wanted $200, and it was early in season for me (probably wouldn't play too well) but I'd have played for that with them or you, not alone. I'd try to opt to carry, but under those circumstances I'd fork over the caddie fee and tip.   But, I still just feel that there has to be some point to say, no.  I think it is probably easy for others to shoot holes in my arguement.  I realise it is a individual sort of distinction or price point.

But, I'll stick with a personal statement about what I think of the cost and perhaps value of golf relative to all else (for me -$250).

Dan, I can only answer from the stand point of all that has been posted on the three courses here on GCA.com and converstions with folks who have played them.  I'd say, Pac Dunes and Trails a toss up, and punt on Bandon Dunes at about 100.  Fair enough?  ;)
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

As a general rule as I said above, right now my limit is $300.  To illustrate, I'm heading over to Scotland in Sep. but am passing on Troon, Turnberry and Muirfield.  That being said, I'd go over $300 for the opportunity to play at TOC, Augusta, Cypress Point, National and some others.

I don't recall ever punting, but I have walked off after 9 holes several times, mostly because I was bored with the course or the front 9 took 3 hours.

I punt when it comes to a 2nd play of the same course and don't if I didn't like it on the first play.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

John,
I passed up playing a round with a great gentleman named Mac Moore. He was involved with the original group of developers from WF who built Bull's Bridge GC in Kent, Ct., and he came to Hotchkiss to introduce himself early on in the process. He enjoyed sitting around on our front porch and throwing it around so he visited once or twice more, and then asked me to come down and play a round with him that fall. I declined due to an ongoing knee problem that made walking a chore.
Sadly, he passed away that winter and to this day I wish I had gone, just for the chance to visit with him one more time.

I'm not sure I totally understand the definition of punting... but i think this counts... on my last trip to Chicago i rearranged my flight there so i could play olympia fields (north) on the weekend before a week of work. Mid week my friend from OF said he was playing at Chicago G.C. the next weekend and would we like to join him... Unfortunately my flight left for London on the Friday evening, and couldn't be rearranged (work was paying for it).

At the time I, being uncultured when it comes to golf courses, decided the price of another flight wasn't worth paying for a golf course I hadn't heard of. But now I'd have changed my mind in a second and eaten the flight cost myself.

Drat.

Godon, good luck with raising money at Panmure.   I have already pledged for a former employee who is aiming for 4 rounds of The Grove.  I've only seen a part of it but he's facing some pretty long walks on concrete between holes and then more walks past the back tee's all x 4!

Some fedback on how you enjoyed it would be great.

Passed up on a (free) round on the second course at Turnberry as my long suffering wife was alone at the hotel.  I might start a thread on this but for me playing a Clubs 'second 18' in the afternoon when you've played the great course in the morning is a real bummer for me - think Dornoch.

Tony,

Merion GC has two courses.  Naturally, everyone wants to play the East and most want to go right back out and play it again.  But when they reluctantly agree to play the sub-6000 yard West Course, their reluctance turns to elation as it is a real throwback to 1910s golf with unique and enjoyable holes (especially 4-8,11-14 and 16-18).  There is a lot more topography on the West than the East and it is a lot of fun and just enough measure of challenge to offer another dose of humility.

The East has its tradition, lovely PA farmhouse clubhouse (1824) and enjoyable difficulty in the golf course.  The West has its small log cabin clubhouse, dynamic topography and throwback experience.  It makes for a great combination.

I punt on courses I've designed because of the hassle. One is a quarter mile from where I'm typing....and I punt on some others because of the memories.

I was out in LA last year hosting some clients on business.  I had 7 guys.  We got on Riviera one day and I hoped to get on LACC on day 2.  I found out that I could get three guys on LACC on Day 2 and not 7 so I had to punt it.
Still pisses me off to this day that I had to pass up that opportunity.

As Arnold says though, "I'll be back."
