Architectural History of North Berwick

Does anybody know which hole this is?  I am guessing it is #12, but it doesn't look quite right to me.  This painting dates from before 1900 and the Three Majors did some work to North Berwick in the 30s I think.  Is there any chance that some of the routing was reversed?  Anybody know what changes were made to North Berwick after 1900?

Given the location of Bass Rock and the elevated topography, I'd guess that is a picture from the uplands on the Glen course and not the West Links, but it's just a guess.

Sean,

it could be that Richard is right it might be that it is a scene from the Glen maybe on the higher holes before trees there were planted. It is difficult to judge, is the background really sand or yellowly grass?

If it is sand then maybe you are right and it has to be the west in which case the 12th seems to be a good candidate or maybe nearer to the 14th green? Don't forget the coastline may have changed considerably in the last 100 years or so.

Sean and Jon

The right hand background of your picture seems to me to show a beach much lower than where the golfers are playing from.  Also your photo of the (13th?) at the Glen seems to confirm that any representation of Bass Rock such as in your picture which has proper perspective would have to have been painted from a spot on the Glen.

I think you will find that it is the fairway bunker on the 12th at The Glen. It's a longish par 4 with one fairway bunker on the beach side, although the artist does seem to have the land a little low.

The angle of Bass rock is not right for the West links.

Given that it's a painting it is probably a stylistic interpretation: composed from an artist's eye rather than copying reality.
