WA Golf-Fircrest and Canterwood
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:09:57 PM »
We are headed up to Chambers Bay in June and scheduled some side trips to Fircrest, Gold Mountain and Tacoma CC. A recent visit by one of the gang said that Fircrest has removed a lot of diseased tress and the greens are in disrepair, thus making us change our plans to Canterwood.

Does anyone have the altest on Fircrest and/or insight on Canterwood?

Thanks

Canterwood is a very nice late-'80's vintage Robert Muir Graves course & club, set withiin a residential community.  The golf course is good - and is generally rated amongst the top-10 in Washington state.

Canterwood is very, very difficult. OB on both sides of every fairway. Very pretty but I would recommend a number of courses in the area. Paging Cos, this is his neck of the woods.

Why not play the supporting course to Chambers Bay when the US Amateur is played there in 2010.  The Home Course is about 5 miles from Chambers Bay and is a really nice course.  It also happens to be owned by the Washington State Golf Association and Pacific Northwest Golf Association so you would be supporting amateur golf in the area.

Home Course
Trophy Lake

As Sean stated, Canterwood is EXTREMELY difficult and not that fun.

Sean is to the point. Canterwood will not inspire. I am sure there are others in the area that will provide more pleasure. I have played the Home Course once and that was with Sean Leary, Jordan Wall, Pete Pittock, Garland Bayley (Anthony please note), Sean Reahorn and probably others I cannot recall. We all liked the course, especially the greens. The place was not great but I think it is safe to say that most of us would rather have played the Home Course than Canterwood.

Thanks all to the comments on Canterwood and suggestions for other courses. Our itinerary includes CB, Canterwood-Day1. Olympic, Trophy Lake-Day 2 and CB, Tacoma CC on day 3. From the sounds of things maybe the Home Course on Day 1 might be the way to go.

Where else would you get to play across a buried dynamite bunker than at the Dupont Dynamite Works, aka The Home Course?

You can also try skipping your ball off the pond on #7 onto the green on your approach shot. You know, like the pros do on #16 at ANGC.  ;D

Whqt makes Canterwood so difficult?

Is it visually intimidating? Tight holes? Is it a penal course with no strategy?

Could this course be fun to play if you know what shots to hit and you are able to execute or is it simply evil?

Thanks

Fircrest has had a rough year.  At last playing on the twenty seventh of April there were 4 temporaries.  Lots of different stories as to why the greens were almost lost but suffice it to say that it is a shame that they are in such poor condition.  I would say half of the greens have serious damage.  The removed 360 trees in an effort to get some more light to the golf course.

Canterwood has never been one of my favorites.  It is narrow, narrow and narrow.  The ninth and 18th holes are very 'unusual'.  They have undergone a lot of work to soften the course and, admittedly, I haven't played it since then.  The Home Course is very good with excellent views and interesting putting surfaces.  They have changed the par three 11th to a par 4 and the 12th has become a part three.

My home course, Oakbrook, has excellent greens and while suffering from several years of tough times it remains interesting.  As you look at Google earth Oakbrook is the nearest course you see just to the east of Chambers.  About 1 1/2 miles as the crow flies.

Others in the area of interest are McCormick Woods, the Classic (owned by Ryan Moore's father) and Trophy Lake.

Fircrest could be so, so good... a historic sketch plan of Macan's original layout is quite revealing as well.
