Latest on early Fall gathering at Lawsonia?
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:46:23 PM »
Can someone either reply or PM me with the latest plan for a potential gathering at Lawsonia this fall.  If its not going to happen, I think my sticks will likely remain in storage this year. ;)

Cheers,
Brad

Several of us, slowly and unsurely, have been planning a Langford Moreau get together based at Lawsonia for early September.  Stay tuned for details in the next couple of weeks, I hope.

On a related note I was there last weekend and everything was in very good early season form with the greens continuing to be somewhat vexing due to their lack of speed.  They have a new regime this year of rolling the greens after cutting them so we'll see how they progress as the weather warms up.

I'm going to be in Wisconnsin for the Eagles game September 9th, if something was done that Friday or Saturday I would be almost a shoe in.

Dan -

At West Bend CC (Langford/ Moreau) we are also experimenting with rolling.

Saturday we mowed the front nine (.135 ?) and it stimped at 9-9.5
The back was not mowed but rolled and it stimped at 10 -10.5.
A foot more without mowing.

Lawsonia at 10 would be a treat.

Michael I spoke to Jay Blasi, fellow Wisconsin allum, yesterday and he see the Badgers making the Big Ten theirs as well. In fact he spoke as if he was planning on being in New Orleans next January. I  am sure he meant to see us play but for some reason I believe he thought the Wisconsin team would be there as well. lol I am on a long weekend with some friends from Houston and New Orleans to Whistling Straits. I just could not pass up Lawsonia Links if I am this close. Erin Hills is as much curiousity as anything else. The Tigers had their way with the Badgers 38 to 28 in 1971. I think it is the only time we have come to Madison. I would love to come back in the fall when the smell of cheese is in the air.

This hillbilly will be conducting a cultural exchange in Madison the week of August 13th and intends to play Lawsonia and Erin Hills.  As the schedule firms up I'll be looking for playing partners.

McConkey and I will be there for you Mike...  ;) ;D ::)

Really, I will join Tiger, and am going forth with Dan's plan for sept, and one more extra time for Lawsonia in August won't hurt...

One big question I have is if Ran is going to be able to do the Sept., gathering since he expressed interest in such a gathering a number of times.  I hope the big guy checks in on this soon.

This very much a work in progress at this point but here what  Dick, Mike and I have been discussing so far.

We are looking at a Friday afternoon to Monday GCA Weekend.  It would include 3 Langford and Moreau courses.    The focus will be on Langford and Moreau and we hope to have some participation at each of the courses from architects who have worked on L/M courses and/or who have an interest in their architecture to give presentations on Langford and Moreau and the courses.  We will probably also include a sidetrip to Erin Hills.  Everything we are talking about is located within 1 1/2 hours of Lawsonia.

At this point it looks like we can keep the cost for just the golf under $500 for 4-5 rounds and will do the best we can to get that cost down.  Accommodations in the Lawsonia area are plentiful and in every price bracket.

We are looking at the two weekends in September after the Labor Day weekend.

Assuming there is sufficient interest we are shooting to have this firmed up sometime in the next few weeks and will be able to make all the details known at that time.  In the meantime please let us if this is something that interests you so we can gauge whether to go forward and how many slots we will need.

Thanks.

Once we know something definitive on dates, it would be good to post a running list of those who are in as they are doing on Dixie Cup.  That way, folks will know how big the group will be and maybe pair up on room accomodations, rental cars and such.

Tiger/Mike,
Shoot me an IM with your plans if you wish as I'm hoping to get up to Lawsonia a few times this summer and would enjoy playing with you both (schedule permitting).

Cheers,
Brad

Dan, in scheduling it may be relevant to note that Sept 22 is Yom Kippur.  There are some of us who, like Sandy Koufax, are unavailable due to a more important commitment.

Shelly,  Thanks.  We are considering the weekends of 9/7 to 9/10 (first choice) and 9/14 to 9/17, so that will not be an issue.

Looks like we have 11 interested parties so far.  Anyone else please let us know if you are interested in this event.

Brad Swanson
Ian Andrew
Michael Wharton-Palmer
Jim Thompson
Mark Arata
AStavrides
Phil McDade
Eric Terhorst
Tyler Kearns
Jason Mandel (Lawsonia only)
Shivas
Michael Kennedy
Pat Craig (August better)
Shelly Solow
Mike McGuire
Dick Daley
Dan Moore

So far we have been looking at a Friday afternoon to Monday morning event that would include Erin Hills for around $450.

An alternative would be to exclude Erin Hills (which would be easy enough for any participants to visit on their own before or after) and make this a three day Langford Moreau only event for around $300.

Price is for golf only.  Food and accomodations not included.

Please let us know if you are more interested in the 3 day vs. 4 day event.

If it happens on the weekend of 9/8, I could perhaps make it on Friday, but Iowa's got a rare night game on the 9th I don't want to miss!  The following weekend would probably work pretty well for me, I could probably do the whole weekend if it happens then.

Here is an update on the Fall Lawsonia Outing which is now a tour of Langford Moreau's courses in Wisconsin.

While the dates and courses are fully confirmed a few more details on pricing and architect participation are being worked out.  Final arrangements will be posted in new thread in the next week which will include all details and information on accommodations and how to reserve a place.  We have room for 24 golfers.

Here is the tentative schedule.  Cost for green fees should be around $225-$275.  Food, drink and accommodations are not included.

Friday Sept. 7th
Spring Valley Country Club (optional 18 holes)
West Bend Country Club (private) (9 holes and Wisconsin Fish Fry)

Saturday Sept. 8th
Lawsonia Links  (36 holes)

Sunday Sept. 9th
Ozaukee Country Club (private)

This is an exciting opportunity to see almost all of Langford Moreau's work in Wisconsin over the course of one weekend.  About the only Wisconsin work we won't see is the renovation of 5-6 holes at Westmoor CC and remnants of wjat looked like a 3 or 6 hole short course at the Leathem Smith Lodge.

We have not included Erin Hills in our plans but all courses are within 75 minutes of Erin Hills and Whistling Straits for those who would like to bookend their trip with visits to those courses.

Organizers:  Dan Moore, Dick Daley and Mike McGuire

That's great.  Dick, Mike and I need to discuss the extent to which we can accommodate non-GCA guests.  I assume there wouldn't be a problem so long as our GCA brethren get first crack at the slots.

While I'm hoping to meet directly with Dan and Mike at the soonest possible mutually available date, I have checked with the ex-director of golf at Lawsonia, Jeff Penkowitz, who now runs a pretty nice pub and grub restaurant about < a mile from Lawsonia's gate.  He said he could accomodate about 30 people for a private room dinner, and would ask that we have no more than two or three selections for dinner so he can get it out promptly to us.  Then, we will have a room for our round-table discussions or presentations.  I'll confirm that with Penkowitz and finalize it with Dan and Mike ASAP.

I am still going to try to get some input from the Lawsonia superintendent about the restoring process he undertook, and there is another great super in the area that had some outstanding restoration-remodelling done at his very private, very fine classic gem.  I can't put him on the spot right now without talking to him first.  Obviously, after 36 holes and the time it takes to eat dinner, we won't have all night to make presentations and such, yet there is so much to see and discuss.  So, I suggest that someone that has a nice laptop that can play a CD or DVD with a presentation of some of this remodelling, have that available for any splinter group that wants to look beyond the allotted time we can all share at the dinner.  I have the CD of the work at that other club I mentioned above, and the pictures of the work are as good as I've seen detailing such work.  But, I don't have a laptop to show folks.
