Andrew,

You're right, of course. Forgot about the Low 60 thing since I blew up on the second day and wanted to kill myself.

You make it this year?

I played the Shore course today. A few thoughts:

1) It's easily as good as everyone here says it is.

2) It's the least linear golf course I've ever played. Everything is curving and rounded and rolling and swooping. I'm hard pressed to think of a straight line anywhere on the course.

3) As for the boulders on the much-photographed par-3 #11 (and elsewhere on the course), yes, they fit in perfectly. (Of course they do, they're natural!)  I think a fair statement is that only those who haven't played the course would say that the boulders looked out of place. I wondered if they did, too, until today.

4) I'll second Mr. Bonnar's statement that the company at MPCC is very, very good indeed.

Yes, one of the more ironic/hypocritical stances ever taken in this august forum was Mr. Mucci, he of "you can't judge a course by pictures" telling all of us who have played MPCC Shore that we're all wet, he can tell better than we can - FROM VIEWING THE PHOTOS AND HAVING NEVER PLAYED THE COURSE - those boulders are obtrusive and out of place on 11.  Glad to read you've seen the light, Matt.

And the world awaits for details of yesterday's storied summit-meeting.... do tell.....

I played it the day Mike Strantz died.  It was moving, to say the least.  Here's some notes I took:

Huck, you are DEAD WRONG about the boulders.  Those rocks were strewn all over the coastline and decorate the course now.  I'll post pics some time soon so you can see, but your only looking at one tree and when you see the whole forest, you'll turn around on it.

Matt,
How did you enjoy the Wolf experience? Or was this part of the State Am? Either way I hope you had a chance to see Bob.

Ed,

We did play with Bob, which was great of course. I know it will surprise many that we did not have a game of Wolf going. (I didn't mind, as I was happy to concentrate on learning the course). From what I understand, I would been facing a formidable opponent.

Our official practice round is Sunday and the tournament starts Monday.

I was thinking of popping down to watch the tourney at MPCC on Tuesday. Are the courses open to spectators? What's the scoop?

Yes, contestants are allowed, see restrictions below:

Monday and Tuesday are the qualifying rounds, each player plays one round on the Shore and Dunes course:

FORMAT:  Monday June 18 – 18 holes of stroke play on Dunes and Shore courses with 78 players per course starting at 7:30 AM in groups of three off tee number one.

Tuesday June 19  – 18 holes of stroke play on the Dunes and Shore Courses with 78 players per course starting at 7:30 AM groups of three off tee number one.

DRESS:  VERY IMPORTANT – Contestants, caddies and spectators must be properly attired on the grounds and buildings of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Blue jeans, T-shirts or tank tops are prohibited. SHORTS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON PROPERTY FOR THE PLAYERS, CADDIES OR SPECTATORS.  HATS MUST BE REMOVED WHEN ENTERING ANY OF THE CLUBHOUSE FACILITIES.   A player or caddie violating this dress code will not be permitted to start the competition. If during play the dress code is violated by either the player or his caddie the violation must be rectified without undue delay or the player will not continue to play (Note: Perhaps it would be easier to shoot the violators ...) and the caddie will not be allowed to perform the acts of a caddie. Spectators in violation will be asked to rectify their situation as well or will have to leave the property.

Jay:  Huck has played the course many times.  Huck was quoting the idiocy of Pat Mucci, who passed judgment solely from photos that those rocks were obtrusive and out of place.  When he made this ludicrous and hypocritical statement, I argued with him vehemently.

Yes, I agree with Matt and Jay - or to put it more correctly, they agree with me.

And this is the last time I will ever refer to myself in the third person.

I'll be walking the Dunes course from 8-11 and then following a group or two on the Shore course in the afternoon on Tuesday. I hope to see some of you out there. Go Matt!
