Longest Holes in U.S.
« on: May 08, 2007, 09:37:58 AM »
Aside from the bizarre, what are the longest holes out there on courses we might consider mainstream?

Forrest,

Sutton Bay has three par-5's on the front side which stretch beyond the 600-yard mark, the longest being 663 yds.

I recall those when I played there...fortunately I did not play them at that distance!

My guess is that 700-800 will easily consume most of the responses, but those are worth noting.

At one point until about 6-7 years ago, this was true at my home course:

Although the sign still stands, it has been surpassed several
times since, the first (I think) was 9th at The Gallery (North) at 726 yards.

Meadows Farm in Virginia has a par 6 at 841 yards.

I thought I'd heard of a 1000 yard par ? at some Japanese course.

The International Golf Club in Bolton, Mass., at 8,325 yds., has par fives of 674, 715, 656 and 590.  When I was a kid (43 years ago), I played 54 holes there in one day.  May never have recovered.

The RTJ Trail in Alabama has a smattering of 700+ yard par 5's across the state.  Capitol Hill, Highland Oaks and the Shoals each have at least one.

Purgatory in Noblesville has a par 5 of 741 yards.  But no one ever plays from there I think.  I don't even know how you get to the tee box without walking through knee-deep weeds.  Of course that at times is how I have to find many of my tee shots.   ::)

Kahite in Vonore, TN (south of Knoxville) has an 800 yard par 6 on an otherwise pretty normal course.

Great! Finally a hole my wife can par.

What did you get on #8 today dear?
I got another par.
Another 72? You don't seem to be improving much.

If you call Chocolay Downs, they do not have the new 9 holes open yet that will have the 1,007 yard hole.  The new 9 holes will not open for another 2 to 3 years.

The aerial of the course shows that the new 9 holes have been cut / roughed in but not seeded.

I think the 4th at Key Biscayne (Crandon Park) was 651 par 5 from the back of the tee box, pretty much the longest hole I have ever played...I did see a few of the 700 yard holes on the RJT courses, but the tee boxes were sort of urban legends, sort of like the hidden tees at Pacific Dunes...they were there, but you really had to know they were there and want to go find them.....

New Orleans, proud to swim home...........
