9th at Quaker Ridge, a great par 3
« on: September 07, 2002, 04:44:08 AM »
Doak mentions the 4-7th holes as being the best stretch at QR and 4 and 6 certainly are wonderful natural land form par 4's, but number 9 playing 170 from the back is one heck of a par 3 ranking up there with #10 at WF(W) and #7 at SFGC, maybe number three in this great group, but still one of Tillie's best. Diagonal green with nice internal contour and slope, fronted by 3 bunkers in the front and a large bunker in back. Also making the hole hard to judge are the trees to the left making it difficult to fiqure to wind. Are these Tillie's best par 3's? Have I left any out that are of this class?

Shot values like Augusta's 12 set the other way?

Best 3? You're forgetting Fenway  Mr Miller, all but 17. :o

16 Sleepy Hollow?  Careful what you choose.

16 at SH isn't Tillie, if you are  a fan you should know better, and even if it was it is not close save  for the view. Fenway NOT, the par 3's at QR are generally much better, what's your fav at Fenway, hopefully not 17 :) I think Feway and QR are very close and both great courses, just think that # 9 at QR is one of Tilles best, there isn't a par 3 at Fenway that compares to the oringinal 3 posted on this thread.

Brad Miller:

I'm a big fan of Quaker Ridge and the initimate feeling of #9. Tom Doak is probably right that the finish is somewhat of a letdown, but the course as a whole is wonderful. I could enjoy playing there everyday.

Tillie par 3's not mentioned that i am familiar with, bethpage 17, balstusrol 4.  I think SH 16 (macdonald) is better than both and will hopefully look better without the Rees bunkers soon.  It is more than a good view as the green is effectively half the size because of the invereted surface and it is a tough two-putt from anywhere with long putts to the back pins looking as if you are putting into the Hudson.  View does count for something no?

OOOOPs!  Teasing the wrong Miller.

Sharp.

Woe is the soul who prefers 17 at Fenway.  ;)

Brad,

Never to be left off of any Tillie Par 3 discussion, #2, #12, #16 at Somerset Hills...all classics

#2 may well be the best example of a pure redan outside of Southhampton on this side of the pond. It is a devilish hole with stern test and rare redemption.

#12 is simply outstanding. It is a short hole with a small green fraught with difficulty over water, falling away sloping and speedy surface. Like #9 at QR, the wind is carefully hidden from its prevailing direction and the open pond allows snakey swirls to develop easily. Tillinghast must have snickered when his routing plans revealed this gem.

#16 at Somerset is also great. An uphill elevated deviously sized green with countours that could kill all sloped inside another de-treed trough. Very clever and tough to approach hole that calls for a very desired par with birdies fairly rare.

I do love QR #9,,having made everything there from two near aces (birdies) to doubles.

Slaps, to quote another GCAer, "you might be right as I haven't played (blank) yet" :)

Corey, your comment about putting into the Hudson River is very cool.

Wonder how the redone green at SFGC #7 turned out, I believe Doak was to take it back to its oringinal contours :)

When I worked at Winged Foot I used to spend a lot of time over at Quaker, great course.

I'm going to have to double check but I'm pretty certain that 9 is the hole that Rees actually changed when he did his renovation work there.  I'm wondering if it's a Tillinghast hole!

Great photo of #10 at Quaker Ridge. If I recall, it plays about 195 from the back from an elevated tee. Great hole to start the back.
