MUST SEE! Link to an Amazing Photography Collection
« on: April 25, 2007, 03:25:14 PM »
Everyone on this site ought to be interested in this collection of early golf photographs.  This was brought to my attention by the historian of Merion Golf Club and to his by Andy Mutch, archives consultant supreme.  There are some fabulous photos.  ENJOY!

Thanks Wayne for posting this link. Fantastic photo's! Are any of these available in reprint for purchase? It doesn't say.

David,

I am sure it is possible.  The resolution of the images I saved are OK for viewing but do not blow up well at all.

Here is where the gallery is located and I am sure where copies can be had:

Howard Schickler Fine Art LLC
PO Box 49227
Sarasota, FL 34230
E-mail: gallery@schicklerart.com

Here is a better link that categorizes by subject in golf with more photos:

Thanks for the info. The one of Old Tom walking in the cemetary towards Young Tom's grave is haunting, sad and beautiful at the same time. I love the photo's of Vardon and Braid.

I am amazed by the breadth of photographs and the quality.  I admit I was looking for particular photos (of Flynn courses and Merion) but I will definitely go through this more carefully including the Tom Morris photo you mention.  Thanks.

There is a collection of European and Russian photos as well as space and astronomy.

Even in a still photo you can see the incredible balance and perfection of Snead's swing. Looks so easy.

Sean, in my mind, Vardon is right up there with the greatest ever. The man lost 5 years, I believe, of his career to TB.

That last photo is a very rare snapshot of Tom Paul watching the action in his Eton short pants suit and straw hat.  What a find!

David,

I don't think so.  That looks like Tom's grandfather's lackey, JP Morgan babysitting  ;)

Sean - terrific choice of pictures. I can't get over how good and athletic a swing Braid has going there. I know he was a champion golfer, but I'd never imagined his swing looking like that. I'm getting myself fitted for a wool jacket and trousers as we speak...see if I can channel some of that style!

Wayne - thanks again.

Nice, but compared to this site a depressingly-small number of a$$ pics. Didn't they know how to take pictures back then?

I assume that is Augusta #13 and Rae's creek.  Correct?

Cool picture.
