These are from two years ago, but I doubt much has changed. Hopefully they bring happy memories for some, and will stimulate others. I was lucky with the weather - some of these are late pm, others early morning. Forgive the scenery shots, but they were difficult to resist.

Is that 17th hole really a par 4 of 194 yards?  If so, please describe.

Oh amazing!  I've been curious about this course for ages after seeing the huge blowout bunker in golf magazine's list of world's toughest bunkers.

Cant wait to play!

This is indeed the lovely jubbliest of courses. Not the best course I've ever played but definitely my favourite. The place I would play my last round of golf. If only they could get rid of that stupid 10th hole!

Great photo of the 'himilaya' bunker Philip - it really does give some idea of the sheer size of it.

It's the ladies tee. I must say I hadn't noticed it before - it's a 200 yard par 3 for the men (part of a wonderful 5,3,4 finish). It's quite steeply uphill and very well defended in the dunes so I guess they thought it was too difficult as a 3 for ladies.

Ed - I completely agree with you - the 10th is a hopeless hole, too difficult/flukey.

I was too lazy last night to caption the photo's, but they are roughly in order round the course - the first pic is of the opening hole, the second is looking back to the clubhouse from the first greeen, with the 18th on the right, the third pic is looking back down the second fairway. Er, that's enough.

Personally, the holes I like most are the third - downhill par four, with the wall in the middle of the fairway (fourth pic) and the fourth (fifth pic), a driveable par four, uphill right to left, with the wall OB along the right.

If you get weather like I did, there are very few better places to be. It just feels good to be alive on that course with those views!

Sean,

I read on St. Enodoc's website that the 10th is their 'signature hole' - I hate that term. There are several better holes on the course and if any hole is the most memorable it is surely the 'Himilaya' 6th.

I like holes that give you options rather than make you think 'where the **** can I hit this'. I don't have many options off the tee for instance. The fairway basically stops at 250 or so yards taking driver out of the equation totally - given the length of hole it has to be a 3 wood really. The 4th has infinitely more options available and it's only 300 yards.

With the 10th it seems to me they had to get from the 9th green to the 11th tee and this was the best they could do.

I can see post Hoylake and post your performance yesterday at Beau Desert - surely in future pundits will talk about these two events side by side? - the rest of us are going to have to put up with a lot strategy lectures from Mr Arble. ;D

When I think about that hole I don't feel too puzzled - I am pretty clear in my mind!

Great pictures!  They brought back happy memories of the time I played it a few weeks ago.  I presume the fairways are currently browner and faster than when Philip was there!

I didn't solve the puzzle of what club to hit off the 10th tee. Mind you we weren't helped by the fact that the group we had been following and who had held us up over the previous two or three holes decided on the 10th tee to let us through. We therefore felt under pressure to get on with our tee shots as quickly as possible so I went on to auto pilot and pulled out the driver!

I certainly wouldn't think of 10 as the signature hole - I thought it was the start of a rather bland set of holes and things don't really liven up again until 15 or 16.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Braid gets no props because:

1.  The chroniclers of "Golden Age" golf were all English
2.  Braid was Scottish

PS--Old Tom Morris was dissed for exactly the same reason.  It's one of those mortal sins called "Envy." :o

Alright Ed & Philip, I will concede that a little break could be offered on 10.  Perhaps shaving the bottom of the dune just beyond the layup zone so balls roll back into the fairway.  Still, the hole is quite good and better than I remembered it to be.  True, it is a layup then a slashing hook 3 wood, but there would be a sense of satisfaction at pulling off this combo for the routine par.

No, the worst hole has to be #11 or #13 (I think this has a new green) and neither of these two are poor holes.  #s 12 & 14 are much better than I recalled.  Both have fantastic approaches with hard to hit greens even with a wedge in hand.

All in all, St. Enodoc is a better course than I gave it credit for.  The greens are outstanding.  Subtle, but very effective movement.  A perfect compliment to the heaving land.  Loads have tricky little falloffs and require proper fairway placement to get near the pins.

The front nine is really one of the best nines I have played anywhere.  Every hole has something cool going on.  The 8th is a hole I gave little credit to mainly because of the mega bunkering which is really out of place for the remainder of the course (sparse, but well placed- my kinda bunkering).  Playing it with a strong tail wind is very fun.  There is only a few yard landing zone if the player has any aspirations of holding this huge green in relation to a hole measuring only 150 yards.  I also wonder how diferent the 6th would play if a lower fairway was built.  Sort of a 50 yard long 25 yard wide thing which offers a view of the green for the second?  #2 I found to be surpringly difficult and perhaps the best hole on the course.

The back nine doesn't compare with the front, but it has its moments.  I was really surprised at how good #s 12 & 14 are - especially considering the land these holes are built on.  Also, the finishing three are very good.  Though I am told that #16 is to be lengthened this winter.  I am not sure if this means moving the green further up into the dunes or cutting trees down and pushing the tee back.

St. Enodoc really is a must see in England.  It is first class golf at third class prices.  The only drawback that I can really mention are the similarities of #s 5 & 15 - shortish downhill par 3s and #s 12 & 14 - though as I wrote earlier #14 is a really good hole because of the approach and difficult green.

It sounds very odd, but Braid must be considered the king of funk with Pennard and Perranporth also on his CV.  Throw in Brora and it is difficult to understand why the man isn't considered a heavyweight.

Ciao

Sean

Sean,

I agree re 12 and particularly 14 - I think they're very good holes. Also, 6 could be a fantastic hole with a risk / reward lower fairway. I'm not sure about messing with 16 - it's an excellent hole and part of a superb finish. Are they 'improving' it to get more tournaments?

Glad it was better than you remembered - I haven't been for 3 or 4 years but I'll be going next year on holiday and will play at St Enodoc and Perranporth.

"Jimmy Braid - King of Funk". I look forward to the post Sean. ;D

You are right - if you St Enodoc, Brora and Pennard on your CV you have given a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. If I could only play those three for the rest of my life I think I would be a happy man.

Great pictures, as always from Philip.

How hard/easy is it to maintain the Himalayas bunker?  Do they have to replace a lot of sand?
