It's envy, pure and simple.  They usually deliver the message in a snide way, but they're pissed that they don't have a hobby that allows them to enjoy a nice day, so they'd rather spew a little bile in your direction to try to feel more productive and somehow, superior to you.

This black sock thing raises an important issue...if one is wearing black shoes with shorts, what colour socks should one wear?

MWP,

If you're wearing black shoes with shorts the battle is already lost...might as well pull the socks up to your knees...

Even our own MPCirba changed from his real name when posting because he did not want to have potential employers find him on this site through a search engine.  What was he afraid they might find and why should he be scared.  What are examples of other people being discriminated against because they are golfers?

John,

Glad you finally see the light.   As JES II stated, it isn't exactly a resume highlight to be a GCA "God" with 8 zillion posts.   You owning your own business are immune to that type of thing, John, but some of the rest of us have to please the man.

That is my perspective as well, that is the answer I was really looking for..thank you...some of the guys around here, insist on the black shoes and black footie deals..and man does that look goofy to me!
Just wondered if I was alone in that viewpoint...glad to see that I am not.

If we are going to get into a discussion of the etiquette of dress and how it makes us look as golfers let me make this small request.  Please wrap a towel around yourself on the walk from the shower to your locker.  You can't build a hallway wide enough when after a large outing you got em coming at you from all sides.

John,
It's a bit different if someone changes their user name so a boss, or future boss, won't find out they are using, or might use, 'his' time for their pleasure. Just sounds smart to me.

The 'golfer' *stereotype is already well known. Middle to old aged somewhat paunchy reasonably well off conservatively republican white guy.

The only socks that work for golf and shorts are those less-than-manly, white things that stop at the shoe-top.

As if we don't already get weird looking farmer tans from playing the game, now we have tanned legs and completely white feet.   Matched with a sunburned head and arms, and the glowing white torso, it's a real turn-on for the ladies.

Black shoes and white socks looks even goofier, me thinks...what about black footie socks and white shoes with a black saddle?

Mike,
I stick with long pants, otherwise my poor golf ball would think it's out of bounds all day.

I'm always stymied by the choice of sock to wear with golf shoes and shorts. I hate seeing white ankle socks peeking out from black shoes but like John I can't stand the low-rise socks that fall down into your shoe during the round. But on the other hand I refuse to wear white golf shoes, saddle or otherwise.

So I end up wearing black ankle socks with black shoes and khaki-colored ankle socks with brown shoes. I just keep the ankle part rolled down to just above the shoe top so it doesn't look too gay^H^H^H dorkish.

If I lived in a cooler climate I'd just wear long pants all year long...

I only own one color of sock (black) because my wife would refuse to sort anything else.  Thank God they are not like gloves or I would have nothing but two left footed socks folded together.

I confess to all that I have often exclaimed to non-golfers during a truly glorious work day that this would be a great day for golf.  :-X

Mike,

I think your desire to hide goes a bit deeper than your number of posts.  Would you mention in an interview or on a resume that you rate for Golfweek.  It is a source of pride and accomplisment after all that a leading magazine would respect you enough to give you such a weighty responsibility.

A thing I have recently been doing that I leaned from Gib (always dapper) is that I have been rolling up my pants.  Gives my legs a bit more air and saves on the ruination of cuff.  I'm not a big short fan and wouldn't mind if the male capri would catch on...My 11 year old coined the term Capants for men.

Oh, boy.  We haven't yet met, but God help me if you show up on the first tee at Beverly in Capants...

Clearly the "sock" issue answers on this thread is a deserved reason for any loss of any PR game.

If ankle socks are gay...I guess that makes Capri pants Transvestite. It would take a bigger man than me to show up in a pair of Capants.

Capants are no more than plus fours with open ends to allow better air circulation.

I can see club managers all over the country amending their short rule to read that shorts must be no less than 4 inches from the top of the knee and no less than 18 inches below.

John,

I'm the kind of guy that would show up at Victoria National in capants and a blouse.....which, of course, would be untucked, as they are meant to be worn.....improving air circulation....

Now you are just being silly.  I think a guy wore Capants at Wimbleton just recently.
