Golf in San Diego, 4/21
« on: April 14, 2007, 01:27:39 PM »
We've got a 12:00 starting time at Redhawk in Temecula on Saturday the 21st. So far it's Pete Lavallee and myself playing. If anyone would like to join, send me a message! The green fee will be $53 including cart and range balls.

One of my least favorite courses in SD county. I always thought from the back tees it was almost unplayable, way too tight. Course is very manufactured and usually not in good condition. The surrounding houses always made me feel claustraphobic. Interested to hear what you think after you play it. I always enjoyed the SCGA course in Temecula better, you should check it out while your in the area.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

To add to the gloom and doom of Tim, I wouldn't classify Temecula as San Diego ;)

Closer to SD than LA, hey they advertise in the SD golf guide and if its not SD county it's pretty close to county line. When I lived and worked in Mira Mesa which was in the city of SD atleast for the Torrey Pines city discount we had several people commute to work from Temecula. :P

Crikey Tim, is it that bad?

I played it when I was very young not long after it opened and it didn't seem terrible.

Also if anyone is up for Thursday, maybe twilight at Barona...?

Matt, you are a much better player than I am and you are much longer off the tee too, but from the back tees I don't think this course will suit your game, you may be able to score if you leave the driver in your bag and there is no wind. This course is similar to the Bridges in Dublin, CA only tighter, I don't know if you played there or not while you've been in the bay area. Good luck and let me know how you do and what you think of the course. If you get the chance play the SCGA course in Temecula, great greens and much more playable although not easy.

Matt, I just looked it up, last weekend the low gross score for their own men's club tourny at Redhawk from the blue tees was 77. Also in the 2005 state open there Steve Pate shot 74-73-75 under perfect conditions. I just remember it being very unfair and too tight for the length.

Not to butt in here, but you might consider passing on Redhawk and head out to Cross Creek on the other side of the freeway. A far better setting & conditioning (no houses). You're also trading Fream for Hills..... :P

I would echo earlier comments about SCGA; tough RTJ also very close to Redhawk, and reasonable price.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Tim,
You diss the O.C. (No worries, I diss it all of the time myself)

There are more people who commute to the south LA/OC area for work from Temecula then San Diego by a long shot. Proof of this can be seen when your out there at rush hour on the 15 and see exactly how crowded the southbound 15 can get. The other side of the freeway from San Diego is literally vacant by comparison. The only thing coming from San Diego are Coyote trucks filled with illegals on their way to East Elay.

Enjoy Redhawk. Some excellent golf there.
-Some of the best golf in California there.
-Some of the best golf in the country there.
-Some of the best golf in the world there.
-Who would think that the greatest golf course in the world actually existed in Temecula, California?
-The putting green is probably the best putting green ever constructed and the first I ever heard of as a hi-light in the advertisements when it first opened.
-Houses only come into play on 17 holes.
-The Island green 8th is in a class all by itself.
-One of the greatest courses I've ever played, Redhawk. I highly recommend it.

Tommy, I can only agree with you on these two. Do you have some kind of deal with Redhawk? Free passes and free lunch? ::) I once had to spend two hours on that putting green waiting on a frost delay with a friend of mine. We should have stayed there instead of playing the course. If you really like Redhawk, what do you think of Industry Hills Ike course? They are similar only the Ike doesn't have the houses and I thought it was much fairer.

I seem to remember Redhawk having a par 4 with water in play off the tee that you couldn't see and no signage told you about. I hit a great drive right down the middle (rare for me) and came to find out the landing area for that drive was underwater! As I remember it you had to lay up off the tee, I don't think there was a way around.

Let us know what you think Matt. I know for sure that Barona is the better course.

Ed and Tommy, I am glad to see that I was not alone in my observations. I am usually not that tough on courses but Redhawk really gave me a Red-ars. Too many artificial creeks and hazards where they didn't belong.

OK, so any other last-minute suggestions? Anything over about $70 is a lot for me. I mean, I don't even have a job at the moment (and if anyone wants to talk to me about that, please message me!).

Barona is $150 on weekends but I'm tentatively planning on heading there Thursday for twilight ($65, or $52 if you sign up for their club).

Would anyone like to join?

Matt , I am sure that the SCGA course in Temecula is less than $70 and they even give a discount for NCGA members. Also I think that Carlton Oaks(pete dye redo but championship caliber) is cheap midweek and that is within driving distance from Barona. Also Maderas midweek is a great deal and a great course.

Matt,
 I would do the following:

Money is tight and there is nothing better then being able to play affordable golf at a low price. Courses like Oceanside Muni are a kick to play, although a bit wacky in some spots, I can't believe how much these smaller places make me appreciate good architecture, and in some cases, you will be surprised to find some really interesting holes on some of them.

At Oceanside, which you've probably played before, it's an interesting little number with a fair amount of movement later on, and for $37.50 w/cart on the weekends, it could be a lot worse. (For what it's worth, the course is totally walkable, although a bit hilly in certain portions of the property.)

Another one is Balboa, who your cohort there can set you up on how to get on.  Go check out that interesting little nine-holer down in Chula Vista, which is more then likely--if my research is turning things up right, the original San Diego Country Club. It's on a parcel of land that isn't wider then your thumb nail, but it looks like it may have been a kick at one time.
