Paul:

I read it about a month ago, as I was the proud recipient of an advance copy, one of the benefits of still being a members of the Golf Writers Association.

I enjoyed the book.  I hear there is another very similar book also in publication and due out soon, so I will reserve judgment until I've read both of them.

The one fact which was of great interest to me was that Old Tom Morris served from 1851-1864 as the greenkeeper and professional at Prestwick, before returning to St. Andrews after the death of Allan Robertson.  This fact casts a different light both on Old Tom's victories in the early Open Championships (he was playing a course he designed and where he was host pro), and also on the victories of Young Tom (who was born in Prestwick and grew up playing it, not the Old Course).

Young Tommy was born in St. Andrews.  The family moved to Prestwick shortly thereafter.  Old Tom's stint there has never been a secret.

Rich:

Didn't say it was a secret, just that I didn't know it ... and I doubt very many Americans know the Prestwick connection.  The name Tom Morris (both of them) is synonymous with St. Andrews for most of us.

And I misread the part about where Young Tom was born, my mistake.  The end of the first chapter implied that he was born after the move, but the start of chapter two confirms that Young Tom was born in St. Andrews just before the family moved.

Another bit of Morris trivia, if you're interested.  "Young Tommy" was Old Tom's second son named Thomas.  The first died, age 4 in 1850.
