The below 1910 newspaper clipping is a Bendelow mystery to me. It describes a new club on the banks of the Assiniboine River. Bendelow's St. Charles Country Club on the Assiniboine was an old club (1904 - 1905). Bendelow's Pine Ridge aka Birds Hill GC (1912) was nowhere close to the Assiniboine River.


I'm scratching my head. Anyone know anything?

Are you familiar with the flooding problems along the Assiniboine River. They weren't addressed until the 60's and continue to plague the area to this day. I like how you say Pine Ridge was built nowhere close to the river.


I grew up in river country. No one wants to admit out loud that it's a coming and it can't be stopped.

Pine Ridge is closer to the Red River than anywhere near the Assiniboine River from what I can see on Google maps. Besides Pine Ridge is not on the banks of the Red River.

From the book Manitoba Links: A Kaleidoscopic History of Golf, the original golf course at St. Charles was designed by a man named Pearson, being hired on Sept. 8, 1904.  The St. Charles club history book states that Bendelow designed the golf course in 1910, corroborating the article you posted.  I don't believe the club history mentioned the Pearson course, perhaps it was very rudimentary.  At it's inception, polo was the sport of choice on the property.

The flooding problems that plagued Winnipeg were along the Red River.  The Red River Floodway aka "Duff's Ditch" was constructed between 1962-1968 to allow excess flood water to flow around the city.  It was no minimalist project, 100 million cubic yards of dirt were moved to built the 29.4 mile diversion.

I was thinking that the article had to be talking about St. Charles. This one doesn't seem to be on the MSU TIC Bendelow list. I might be wrong.
