Founders Club (Pawley's Plantation)
« on: April 15, 2007, 07:44:47 AM »
I just spent time driving around The Founder's Club (old Sea Gull GC) with architect Tom Walker.  The back nine is shaped and about to be grassed.  The front nine is roughed.  The course is slated to open in Sept.

Like his last effort (Pendleton GC in central VA), Walker looks to have created another bold and artistic layout featuring Mike Stranz-like green complexes, 2-tiered fairways, inspired bunkering and even a #10 PVGC tribute.

I swear Walker should be getting more press as his work is novel, sometimes quirkly but very refreshing.

Ran - you should interview this guy!

Here's an article I recently wrote on Pendleton.  Don't worry about reading it just check out Chris John's photo.  This is the knid of stuff Walker built at Pendleton and is building at FC.

Jonathon, hard to believe I just read Sea Gull GC and Strantz-like greens in the same post!  Walker must have done quite a lot.

OK, you only have time for one round down there at the south end--you going to the grown-in Founders Club or True Blue?

Sorry AH, I'm not a True Blue fan.  I much prefer Caledonia.  I'll wait until opening day in Sept before I weigh in on a finished Founders but from what I've seen, Sea Gull has grown into a Sea Eagle.

Jonathon, I'm sorry, but you will need to turn in your official gca membership card  ;)

I look forward to seeing the new course...could always use another good one down there.

(PS I'll be playing TB next Friday...I really hope to escape this April DC weather and enjoy some warm sunshine)
