What does the treehouse say about greens ringed by sand? Particularly on par threes.

I'm talking about the likes of:

16th @ Royal Zoute
8th @ Deal before they filled the two at the back
17th at Wollongong for the Aussies

I read somewhere - perhaps Ran's Zoute review - that they are a great use of the penal design present in Dye's 17th @ Sawgrass, but with the added element of allowing you to try for a spectacular par save from a deep trap.

MacDonald's template for his 'Short' hole was often ringed the entire way (or almost) by sand, was it not?

I think it's OK once in a while to say "Here's a hole with danger all around. See if you are up to the challenge!"...

May be more difficult to pull it off aesthetically... Depends on the environment I suppose...

the 8th hole at Country Club of Montreal is surrounded by sand.

I've heard it was done in the 70' by some Pete Dye protégé... Bill Coore

Bill Coore did work on the job in Montreal for Mr. Dye ... I don't know how much of the course was his idea.  But he did tell us an hilarious story a couple of months ago in Bandon about trying to re-enter the USA in his car, after having let P.B. Dye borrow it for a couple of months.

Tom, it was a renovation, the club exist since 1903...

Bill Coore being there, that might explain the big bunker on number 1 with some railroad ties too
