in search of any good 1-2 page articles/essays on the benefits of a selective tree removal program.  any materials anyone has used in the past to educate their membership would be very helpful.

thanks you in advance for any help with this.

 Dave,

Here a few ideas---USGA Green Section articles, several In My Opinion pieces on this site, particularly Dunlop's White, Ron Forse's article "To tree or not to tree" in Masters of the Links".

I would think the last super at NGLA and the current one at Oakmont would be good places to inquire. They both did a lot of tree removal that seems to have been favorably received.

Our very own Brad Klein does a great job of educating club members on this topic.  He spoke at Beverly and Olympia about restoration and tree removal.  His influence helped immeasurably in getting the projects done properly.

I second the hiring of Brad to do one of his seminars. I saw two of them and learned much from them. The before and afters are great.

Brad Klein sure does do a great job with speaking to clubs and such. I've seen him at in a whole bunch of times and he generally gets the crowd loosened up by telling them right in the beginning that the first thing he realized about golf clubs and golf architecture is that really rich people can be really stupid too.  ;)

The first time I heard him say that was at this big forum here in Philly in front of a couple of hundred very rich people. My first thought was Holy Shit, I can't believe he said that. Then I watched all these rich people look at one another with a look on their faces like they were all thinking they couldn't believe he said that either. There was sort of a five second delay or so and then the whole place started roaring with laughter.

That's when I realized Brad Klein was going to really make it on the road!  ;)

thanks 4 the help

i am really just looking for some written materials, although i would love to hear Brad speak on this topic. and i think i remember a few good articles by brad on the issue, but do not know where to find them.

it is more about educating people who inquire about recently completed projects involving tree removable.

Brad can be funny.

I like his line about the ideal memorial tree program.....something like....

'if you really love someone donate $100 and we will cut down a spruce tree in their honor ...$200 for a willow'

Follow the link below. It details the massive tree removal program by some of the highest profile clubs in America. We've used is as an example also.

I could tell you some of the nightmares that HT has with their playing surfaces because of all the trees. It's REALLY hard to get that course to dry out after a rain and, turf quality struggles and they have a very good Supt and very good Asst. It's always at the bottom of Golf Digest's conditioning rating.
