Lawsonia is a treasure. I was expecting a lot given Ran's review but it is better then that.

I also think that is is well worth the trip to Erin Hills.  Hopefully the turf conditions will be better this year. The scale of the place is awesome and with some tweeking it could be pretty special.

John, in the final analysis you only have so many days - hours to golf.  Maybe even a limit on what you'll spend.  

So, obviously everything can't be done at once.  

How much time do you have... what have you already planned for Whistling and the other Kohler courses... are you looking for something very close and convenient to Kohler, or do you have an hour or two one way to go play something else?  

If you have only time for one other course and 1.5 hours travel time to get there each way, Lawsonia is your best ticket, IF THE WEATHER CHANGES IN A HURRY. The snow should melt by late tomorrow or Sat.  But, conditions, dicey mowing, softness, etc will be around a while.

It will be a couple weeks before anything around here is in fair condition.

Also, 10-15 minutes from Kohler, if you just want a hoot, cheap and to see something of a museum piece (not masterpiece) try... http://www.quitquioc.com/index.htm

Pine Hills (private)

Designed by Harry B. Smead, the Pine Hills golf course opened in 1905.

2 minutes north of Kohler. Amazing greens. New par 5 by Ron Forse.

If time and convenience are important then The Bull at Pinehurst Farms is a great choice.  It's right there in Sheboygan.  Nicklaus design with several very strong holes, but it is rather difficult, particularly the back 9.  It sits on property that is similar to the River and Meadow/Valley courses.  I played it last July and it was in outstanding condition and there was hardly anyone else playing.  Cost was $150 in the morning and $90 in the afternoon.  I really liked it.

Lawsonia is a better price value and is a blast to play, but it's 3 hours round trip.  Unless your group is full of GCA types, it wouldn't suprise me if many of them would prefer The Bull.  Even at Lawsonia, I believe the Woodlands course gets more play than the Links does.  Most people enjoy parkland courses more (heresy I know  ).  All that being said, you can't go wrong with Lawsonia Links.

I haven't been to Erin Hills yet, but it is also about 3 hours round trip and is about $150 to play.  This track may very well be the best of the lot however, and will likely be more of a "notch on your belt" type of course in the future than the other 2, if that matters to your group.

Thanks guys. We are playing the Bull on the way in to the home of great toilets. I have always wondered why Al Bundy did not vacation in Kohler. I hope to see Lawsonia somehow someway while in the area. I am curious about Erin Hills given how many people feel it is a true lost opportunity. I thank you for the feedback and nice emails.  It seems Chicago may be calling this Tiger to the south after the long weekend love affair in Kohler.

A couple of years ago, I played Brown Deer two days after the tournament.  Not sure what I was expecting, but I didn't find much to like about the course.  I don't mean to be critical of your post at all, but what did you like about Brown Deer?  I have to go to Milwaukee reasonably often (rarely with the clubs, though) and may need to give it another look.
