Week 18: The 18th at Oakmont

Well, we made it home. It's been a long, wonderful trip. I'll add another thread later about reflections on the whole course.

From the website:

Green 484  
Blue 430  
White 420  
Red 412



This is by far the most picturesque hole at Oakmont and perhaps the greatest finishing par 4 in golf.  You must drive the fairway to avoid the "chip out" bunkers left and right.  An uphill mid-iron to a very undulating green makes for a great finish.

I think I remember Miller hitting a 5 iron to this green in his round of 63.  What will be the typical approach club this year?

This is one of the greatest tee shots in golf. Picture a late afternoon setting sun, beautiful clubhouse in the background, and a hellacious hole in front of you. Great stuff.

I would imagine that these guys would be hitting 6-8 irons and the shorter hitters 4 or 5 irons. It also depends on the firmness of the fairway. Great closing hole though.

Here are four (4) pictures of the 18th green taken from the right side, and from the front to the back.  This, like the other 17, is a facinating complex, and is very befitting the final hole of this course.  Obviously, the pictures only capture a fraction of the details.

Can I add my voice to those thanking you for this series, It's been fascinating and I look forward to the US Open more than ever before now I have an insight into the course.  Thanks also to Ryan for his great photos.

Excellent series.  I learned a lot about the course and was able to see some excellent photos.  I am still not convinced that Oakmont is what I would like to play more than once in my life.  But it does appear to be about as close to the ideal in penal golf architecture as one can imagine.  Whether that is a good thing or not is up to others smarter than me to decide.

Even before I saw it in person, I felt that 18 at Oakmont is the best finishing par 4 in golf.

Thank-you for such a comprehensive tour of the course. I'm pretty blown away by what I've seen.

Since I have not been there, I felt I could not offer and helpful comments, but I thank those who offered their opinions.

Here it is, along with the the overhead. Sorry it took so long, I was on vacation last week. I didn't see any TV, did anything happen in golf the last week or so?





Thanks for the photos, guys. I'm not going to post mine, they pale in comparison. :)

And congratulations to everyone who toughed it out and made it through the long journey. Hope you had as much fun as me!

Thanks George - for the entire series!

I'm sure that all of us who are not there this June will be consulting your series daily as we enhance our viewing pleasure!

Here is my prediction:

NO ONE SHOOTS 63 and Oakmont's penal nature makes everyone forget how tough the first major was. In the end though, the scoring is actually slightly better at Oakmont. It is amazing what those guys do when the wind is not blowing!

My prediction, obvious as it is, is that scoring will be entirely weather dependent. If it rains, they may better the Augusta score a little, if it doesn't, it may top last year's score at Winged Foot.

I also predict Shivas will see what truly interesting, non-tree avoiding recovery shots will look like.
