Augusta - awful flow!
« on: April 05, 2007, 02:54:34 PM »
Boy that MacKenzie sure had no clue how to route a golf course - look at the horrible "flowus interruptus" as one as to walk backwards from 11 green to 12 tee... that Amen Corner must be pretty off-putting.  I can't see how anyone ever enjoys it.

TH

ps - this is for my friends who complain about the flow interruption as one one walks from 5 green to 6 tee at Pebble Beach as it stands today. Sure seems to be as bad or worse at Amen Corner...  ;)

Tom, never have you posted a truer statement than, "Boy that MacKenzie sure had no clue how to route a golf course."

Heck, I'm just surprised that you didn't recommend how the flow would be drastically improved by reversing the nines!  ;D

Gulp.

He did have the nines reverse from how they are now, correct?

Hey, my point is not to bash Augusta, but rather to try and humorously point out the fallacy of making too big a deal out of this whole walking back to a tee thing.  Of course you don't want it all the time, but if the holes involved are great, then I believe we can tolerate it.

Too true Huck...

And don't forget about the walk from 6 green back to 7 tee now, of course that wasn't MacKs fault... ;D

Kalen,

How true.  I think there are even more walk backs than that, and I understand that getting around near the clubhouse is a bit of a problem for the mass of patrons.

Tom,

I don't think the walkbacks would ever be a problem on a course that plays at most 144 rounds a day - and that only during tournament times.  At all other times, the probably get what, 50 rounds a day at most?  Circulation shouldn't be an issue!

And, this comes from me, a gca who does pay attention to that stuff in a way that you probably are making fun of.

But it certainly is 'firm and fast', yes? GCA dream!

Jeff - circulation was never the complaint.  "Flowus interruptus" was.  I'll let those who complain about it try to explain it, because it never made all that much sense to me.

And the walk back from 3 green to the new 4 tee.  And the walk back from 10 green to the new 11 tee. And the walk back from 14 green to the new 15 tee .....

Oh, that's not Mack's fault, now is it?

It's gotta suck, for sure, taking that little stroll between #11 green and #12 tee, since how can you time your cap tip correctly as you're being applauded all the way?

Awful.  Just inexcusable.

Fu***** routing.

It can be solved pretty easily with a bulldozer and dynamite. First, the walk from ten green to eleven tee is backwards. Return to the original eleven tee. Move the eleven green to where the grandstand is behind the twelve tee. It's a little steep there so use the bulldozer to regrade the hill. Dynamite the eleventh fairway so the pond extends to the new green. Leave the twelve tee box where it is and the problems of backward walks are solved.
