Philadelphia GCA Outing-June 23- Update
« on: March 30, 2007, 10:49:09 AM »
I'm thinking of organizing another outing this year at Cobbs Creek. We had such a good turnout at Lederach last year so I'm sure that all would enjoy a look at Cobbs Creek, a course sorely in need of work. I'm thinking of sometime in early to mid-June, either before or after the US Open at that course in western PA.

Let me know your thoughts.

Steve:
Keep me posted.  As a displaced Philadelphian and member of the Philly GCA mafia I would be interested in making the trip.
Best

Only if we also play the architecturally-rich Karakung with that cool bunker feature Wayne Morrison recently mentioned.

Is the the bunker feature at Karakung available during late June during daylight hours?

A Cobbs Creek/Karakung double header is doable.   Larry's Cheesesteaks is nearby at 54th and City Line.

Steve,

Sounds great.  Count me in.  And ditto on Karakong with its bunker bumpers.

Steve,

It might be fun to play a morning round on CC followed by a team event with 4 person scrambles on the mighty Karakung in the afternoon/eve.  Free cheesesteaks to the winning team.

Like Dave Miller, as an expat Philadelphian, I'd love to join the fun.  And, the timing might be right, as the Wiggins clan will be on the East Coast the week prior to the Open.  So if it's Monday the 11th or Tuesday the 12th, I might actually be able to make it happen!!!

Just as Karakung is reminiscent of Merion West, I'm sure folks will find Cobbs the equal of Oakmont.

The only exception possibly being the greens at CC stimping at about 4.

Steve Shaffer,

I've lost all my respect for you, not that I had much to begin with  ;D

Larry's cheesesteaks?  When you are so close to the original Jim's Steaks at 62nd and Haverford?  We'll have to have a cheesesteak judging contest.  Wherever the cheesesteaks are, count me in even though its going to likely be a six hour round, and that's whether we're in front of, behind, or God forbid in the same group with Mike Malone    ;)

I think the Karakung bunker action can happen anytime day or night.    Oh, Mike Cirba, they have them up to a 4?  They're making progress.

Maybe afterwards, we can do a walking tour of another course with Cobb's Creek running through it if I can get permission.

They tried to stimp the Karakung greens, but someone stole the device. God only knows what they will use it for !

Wayne,

As far as the bunker action, what do we see on the original Wilson drawings?   Part of the original genius, I'd assume?

The greens are up to a 4 because the patches where no grass grows run at about a 13, the patches where bent grows shaggy is about a 2, and the weedy stuff like crabgrass can sometimes repel a ball backwards, so figure about a -3 for that on the stimp.  Work it out and it averages to about a 4 or so.

The walking tour will have to wait, Wayne.   This well-heeled group needs a REAL architectural education and they'll only find that at Cobbs and Karakung. ;D

Very well, we'll wait on the walking tour.  I wanted Mike Malone to explain to us all how the other course with Cobb's Creek flowing through it falls short of greatness.

I like how you came up with the Stimp reading, very clever!

Wilson's drawings included the feature but didn't go beyond the missionary style.  Face it, it was rudimentary architecture, not like the more complicated styles of today  ;)

Wayne,

I'm waiting for Mike to tell us the reason's he considers Karakung to be a doppelganger for Merion West!

Perhaps it was the cold, but I don't recall seeing anything at MW quite as uniquely creative as the bunker features you described at Karakung.

Bill Dow,

Now that's a great idea.  PECO is a Flynn renovation and addition of a Ross 6-hole golf course.  It is a short course, 4469 yards with a par of 66.  However, they do have some excellent green complexes.  The guys who play for PECO in the GAP matches do very well, it takes skill to hit those small greens.

Peco is great fun. I could easily see adding it. Maybe we should move to late June and do 54.

Due to my possible business trip June 11, I am proposing June22 or 23 as the date for this event. This should give us enough time to warn Cobbs Creek of our arrival and arrange for play PECO if that's possible.

Steve,

Get your priorities straight.  What is more important, a GCA meeting or work?  Come on man, get with the program.
