Cache Creek Golf Club? Brad Bell design?
« on: March 22, 2007, 03:01:27 PM »
Has anyone seen or worked on this course in No. Cal that is due to open this year. It is designed by Brad Bell and I can't seem to find a sattelite picture or any news on it. Also is anybody familiar with Brad Bell as a designer, what are his influences and who did he work for? I have played a couple of his courses in No. Cal(Empire Ranch and Turkey Creek) and have enjoyed them but couldn't really describe any signature style.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I've played Empire Ranch and Turkey Creek along with Teal Bend, Apple Mountain and Catte Verdera (I believe he only did redesigns/renovations of the last two). From those experiences, I could only say that he generally seems to favor medium width playing corridors and green sizes, avoids over-bunkering/using overly penal bunkering, and he's a big fan of downhill tee shots where the site allows (what designer isn't...).

I don't know that I could pick any particularly significant "signature" style. He just seems to produce challenging, playable public courses that require expert shot-making for the experts to score well and provide bail outs for the hackers.

# 18 at Turkey Creek is probably the most memorable of his efforts for me, with the fairway running right to left between a lake and a water-filled quarry and the green perched against the far side of the latter hazard. Not the most natural looking hole I've ever seen, but very fun and memorable.

Tim,
I am familiar with Cache Creek as it was in my old school district.  Being built by the Wintun Tribe as an amenity to the Cache Creek Casino.  I have seen the drawings and walked a bit of the property.  It is a fairly hilly site.  It will be a cart ball course.  There are some wonderful old oaks throughout the site.  It is not without controversy as it is in the center of one of the premier organic farming regions in the state but the tribe has been exercising it's  sovereginty.

I finally found an article on the course and the design:

If anybody can find a sattelite picture I would appreciate it, I don't have access to google earth.

Its been delayed and I've been meaning to call Brad about the project.  Brads best course IMHO is Coyote Moon in Truckee (Lake Tahoe) which has no houses and is a great golf course that is also hilly and rocky.

Brad is a former UCLA golfer who played with Corey Pavin and went on to a so-so career on the PGA tour.   He seems to really have found himself with designing golf courses.  He is based in Sacramento.

Kyle, have you heard anything about Cache Creek?

Not really. I've been waiting for news, much like yourself.

You should go play Apple Mountain. It's hilly, short (par 70) and tight but it's in a beautiful mountain setting. This time of year you'll find blooming flowers and dog woods framed by snow-capped peaks for about $45 w cart.

About an hour east of downtown Sacramento just off of highway 50 past Placerville.

Was about 10 minutes from the course the other day; wish I had seen this thread beforehand! I will be back in Esparto in 3-4 weeks and will take some photos.

I was told that they've ordered Pebble sand (from one of our customers); not ultra-white, but mildly blinding, just as nature intended ???.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?
