Michigan golf questions

Any (and all) thoughts on the following courses? :)

Arcadia Bluffs
Wuskowhan Players Club
Kingsley Club
Black Lake
Thoroughbred
Eldorado

Which are the best?  Which are close to each other?  Any way to hit them all in a week? ???

I've played 2, and can recommend one based on experience: Kingsley Club is a must!

If the Eldorado you reference is the one in Cadillac....keep headin' north. It's one of the most dangerous routings I've ever played.

Why is Eldorado (in Cadillac) one of the "most dangerous routings you've ever played?"

There's at least one hole where the cart path takes you directly towards a tee on another hole...in range! Also, several other holes that seem to dogleg near other fairways...I just felt like I had to be on the lookout much of the time.

 Kingsley is the must! Arcadia Bluffs I've heard good things about and it isn't too far. High Pointe by Tom Doak is also in the area and worth checking out if you have time.

Black lake is the odd one out, as far as location. It's tip of the mitt, on the huron side. My guess is an hour and half drive from traverse city, at least.

Paul,
  Wuskowhan is one of the best manicured courses in the country. Thoroughbred is weird. #2 and #12 are two of the dumbest hole that Art Hills has ever designed...the conditioning there has gone way down.

Black Lake is at least a two hour drive from Traverse City, and doesn't reach the must play level. It does have above average green contours. If you walk be sure and ask for a bunker rake to take with you.

Belvedere is an enjoyable old time, underrated course.

Paul,
 How many rounds do you plan to play? Treetops by Jones is pretty good, maybe a 4 or 5 on the Doak scale, but the views and the fall foliage will surpass the golf. I vaguely remember 2 or 3 interesting holes, but that was 11 years ago. If we know how many rounds you have in mind it will make it easier to make recommendations. Also if you are going to drive up into Michigan there are some other courses that could break up the drive. Good luck.

Sorry, I was supposed to convey this to you in an email...

Coming around the bottom of Lake Michigan into the State of Michigan, you could stop at Lost Dunes, Pilgrim's Run (which I highly recommend), and Diamond Springs in the southwest. Then head up to the Traverse City area, some 3 hours north for Kingsley and High Pointe and Crystal Downs.

Sounds like a great trip to me  :)

Also in the southwest part of MI is RTJ Sr.'s Point O'Woods, right off the interstate (as is Lost Dunes).

What about Doak's Black Forest?  Is it any good?

IMHO Black Forest is Doak's best work in Michigan, the bunker work is some of the best I've seen. The greens border on being goofy, but the speed is usually slow enough to make them playable and fun. It is an amazing place to play and does not get the credit it deserves. I don't think Boyne has a course that can hold a candle to it.
If I were driving from Chicago to TC and could get on any course my MI stops would be: I think they're listed South to North.

I am a huge fan of Arcadia Bluffs, not everyone's cup of tea but it's the most fun 18 holes of golf I've ever played, not a dud in the bunch. I make the hour drive whenever I can from where we go on vacation. Combine that with 18 at Crystal and that'd be a helluva nice day, only about 30 miles apart I think.

Surprised no one's even mentioned Bay Harbor (or The Bear  ;))

The Bear is a probably a one time thing you should do for perspective,  there are some nice stretches but by the end you'll be bored... perhaps you can get a deal at the resort to lower its cost...  Highpointe is definitely a fuller experience!

Bay Harbor is not worth the $, Treetops east of Gaylord blows it away and as mentioned, the scenery will transcend the golf... Jones Masterpiece, Fazio , or Smith or the ThreeTops par 3 course... go for anyone you can...  and if you're going that far... the Black Forest at Wilderness Valley is a must, about 30 minutes south-southwest of Gaylord

not to interrupt the thread, but i too have a question about michigan golf...

i have one morning to play at the end of september, and i am having a tough time picking between belvedere golf club and arcadia bluffs.  both have their draws and i cannot decide which.  if i could figure out a way to have the privelege to play crystal downs, i would...but i do not think that is going to happen.  i have played just about everything else in the area, including, unfortunatly the bear, and am looking to see something i have yet to see.

any help or advice would be appreciated.  i have been really lucky and fortunate so far this year, as i have played both course at bandon dunes, cuscowilla, and the golf club - plus i went to the master's, so i am hoping to end the season with a great experience in northern michigan.  

thanks in advance for your help and advice.

   You can't go wrong with either Belvedere or Arcadia, it really depends on your preferences. Belvedere is old school, with some very interesting greens and you can play it 3 times for the same amount of money as Arcadia.  Arcadia has been referred to at the lower cost Whistling Straights and is an absolute blast to play, despite the bunker overkill.

  Both courses are fun to play and are a nice contrast to each other.  If you can play both.

the bel is nice, very worth the price even thrice... but you won't yearn to go back there...

My yearly vacation "first played" is black forest so I'm biased, but real home course, closest-cheapest-bestest is Grandview, east of Kalkaska on north side of M-72... love it other than 1st, and 4th holes wedged in...back nine good test... I like it better than the bel... for what its worth...

can't get away from bf and hp to speak about arcadia, but have heard nothing but good
