Fess up...You guys wear your golf shoes so you can feel more like a player.  Maybe someone will mistake you for Kenny Perry and ask for an autograph..pityfull.  If you had just been able to have practiced more when you were a junior...you were so close.

agreed 100%. Major pet peeve of mine.  The only way I can see this being even remotely ok is if it really wet. At the PGA at Sahalee in 98, there was glorious sunshine the first few days and my friends and I made it a point to ask fans that were totally decked out with shoes et al what time their tee time was.  They would look at us quizzically, and we would apologize, saying that because of how they were dressed and with the shoes, that we thought they must be playing. Good times... :)

Andy, tennis shoe types are ok, in my mind. Doesn't apply here :)

Kenny Perry is from Kentucky..He is one of the good guys that you look at and wonder...Why not me?  Sometimes I think golf is 10% hard work and 90% genetic lottery.  Typical loser attitude.

I think I got my job from that genetic lottery I was talking about. I run two businesses.  One my Grandfather started 70 yrs ago and one my Dad started 50 yrs ago.  Yes, I have already been to a golf course today for those who were wondering how you get a job like mine.

Scott,
Have a great time. I went with my brother on a Wednesday many moons ago and will never forget it. Wait until you see how they maintain the place, all the pine needles are parallel. ;) Or so it seems. :)
I'll never forget seeing about 12-15 mowers en echelon coming up #11 fairway together at the end of the day. They mow the fairway in one sweep. I don't know if they go back down, I didn't have time to wait and see.
It would be cool to be there on a tournament day to feel the energy, but until then I will never forget the day we had a group of GCA'ers at the King's Putter and watched the fnal round and saw Tiger Woods chip in on #16 together. An indelible memory.
It is an amazing experience to be sure. Enjoy. 8)

I've often wondered...

While I've pretty much given up hope to ever watch on an actual tourney day, how tough is it to land one of the practice round lottery tickets?

Anyone have any stats from thier experience, like 1 for 10 or something like?  I'd like to take in a practice round sooner rather than later and was curious how likely it is to get in.

Thanks in advance.

Kalen,

I landed practice round tickets on the 7th try, if that helps.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the tip, but I won't be able to make it this year.  I was more curious in general with peoples experience over the years in being able to land these thru the lottery system.

Thanks,

Kalen,

I got my tickets on the 7th try under the lottery system that you are talking about - practice round tickets only.

I'm sorry Scott,

My bad here, my eyes took a little break there.  I thought you said you got tix for the 7th of April and were encouraging me to try for such for the same day...

I feel like a complete arse, oh well, I'll just chalk it up to getting older. 8)

No problem!

I would be curious as to how many tries others have had before finally getting their tickets as well.

It can rain all day there, so bring an extra pair of shoes in the car and an extra pair of socks with you on the course + an umbrella.

Have a plan in case of rain where you are going to go.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Scott,
Eat dinner in Aiken-plent of great restaraunts downtown, much less crowded-great town.
Drive in via downtown Augusta then take the Calhoun expressway right to the course.
Play Palmetto and/or Aiken Golf Club-worth the inflated Masters prices.
Gotta run

Kalen:

I've got a group of 4 that applies for the lottery every year.  The deal is that if 1 of us hits he takes the other three.  We've been doing this since the first year of the lottery which I think was 1995 or 1996.  We've had a dry streak of about 3 years where none of us hit, but at least 1 of us has gotten tickets about 75% of the time.

Practice round tickets are not too hard to buy on the street - literally.  Usually $100 or so will get you a ticket on a street corner (not too close to the course).

Tournament badges are a completely different story.

Pick a favorite player and watch him play his entire round.  Then park it and soak it in.  Right of 15 or right of 13 are great spots to rest.

If you are there for a practice round (which you obviously are) you need to hang for a few minutes at least on the back side of the lake at 16 and watch how many players try to skip an extra ball across the water and onto the green.

The first year I was there Seve was the only one I saw do it, now the crowd goads probably 50% of them into doing it.  Surprisingly enough probably 10% of them can get it to skip across and still get it on the green.  Pretty cool to watch for a few groups as it is something pretty unique.

If you want to watch full swings from behind up close, go to #11 tee.
Very few make the walk back.

Watch a few holes of the older past champions-living history.
It also gives you a feel for how hard the course plays for the 230-260 yard driver.(which is longer than 99% of the world)

Remember they stop serving beer at 4:00-budget your time wisely. ;)

I'm starting to get tingly all over. Nothing like it in all of sport and a few extra trees can't change my yearly excitement.

Hey Scott - Here are a couple of things we did on Tuesdays practice round:
You can take pictures and we did - I hung around the #1 green where you are also on the left side of the #9 tee box.  Got some good pictures of players finishing their swing.
The players are pretty open to being photographed as long as you don't do during the swing.

Stay around late after everyone has finished their practice round, and head down for one last look at Amen Corner - and watch for the big gaggle of mowers - they use maybe a dozen big John Deer mowers and drive them in tandem - it's like a parade.

You got the best day of the practice rounds - everyone is there by Tues, and you don't have the par 3 tournament getting in the way of a full day of action on the course.

Have fun!
Doug
